Interview with Romance Writer Delia Latham

What a whirlwind this life is! Full of tumbleweeds, hurricanes, and floods. Speaking of which, I feel like life has me by the hair and is swinging me around like a rag doll.

My family and I have relocated from Indiana to Florida. I started a new job teaching in a very demanding position, and it's meant I come home and do little else but soak and sleep, work on the next day's lessons, and try to unpack a few boxes. We are still not unpacked after two months!

Which is why this video of my lovely visit with Delia Latham was recorded in April and is just now seeing the light of day. But I believe that God's timing is perfect, and I know that there is someone out there who needs this encouragement! I was encouraged just editing it! There are a lot of writerly tips in this one. Whether you're a budding writer or a seasoned professional, there are juicy nuggets for everyone in this one.

Get your lattes and crumpets ready, kick up your feet, and join us in the writing cave. We're so glad you're here!

Romantic Suspense Author Chloe S. Flanagan Shares Her Superpower Preference (with a Giveaway)

Welcome back to the Diamond Mine, friends. This week I'm pleased to introduce you to another wonderful author. Chloe S. Flanagan was kind enough to stop by an introduce herself and answer a few questions. Plus, be sure and stick around to the end because she's giving away an e-book of her latest release!

About

Chloe S. Flanagan is an author, technical writer, blogger, and graduate of New York University. She enjoys exploring the Christian walk frankly and thoughtfully in her fiction and in her blog, The Candid Corinthian. When she's not writing, Chloe loves music, travel, reading books in all genres, and spending time with family.

SW: I always like to start with a few Would You Rather Questions so we can learn some interesting things about you. Are you ready?

Would you rather know the history of any object you touched or be able to talk to animals?

CF: First of all, thank you so much for inviting me to chat today!
To answer the question, I would rather know the history of an object I touched. I’m a context driven person, so knowing where and with whom an object has been would help me understand its function and potential.

SW: Would you rather be able to teleport anywhere or read minds?

CF: Teleport! I’m an okay driver, but I’m not overly fond of it…especially on interstates. If I could simply step on a platform and *poof* arrive where I needed to go, it would eliminate a lot of stress from my life.

SW: Plus going anywhere in the world in the blink of an eye sure is tempting (much more tempting than hearing what someone else is thinking, in my opinion). Would you rather have all traffic lights you approach be green or never have to stand in line again?

CF I’d rather have all the traffic lights be green. I actually like standing in line because it gives me a chance to whip out my kindle application and read or my “notes” application so I can write.

SW: Ok, that’s it for those questions. Let’s talk books!

In addition to writing (both in your day job as a technical writer and as a fiction author), you are an avid reader. Give us a couple of your favorite reads.

CF: Oh, that’s tough! I’m glad you said a couple, though, so I’m not committing myself to just one. My two favorite genres to read are Historical Fiction and Suspense. In Historical, two of my favorites are A Change of Fortune by Jen Turano and With Every Letter by Sarah Sundin. For Suspense, I love Crossed Off by CC Warrens and Miranda Warning by Heather Day Gilbert. (Okay, okay, that was four, but they were different genres!)

SW: Four is acceptable :). Writing is often a solitary journey. Where to you find motivation and support for your writing journey?

CF: I have been blessed to find community all around me. When I was just starting to play with the idea of writing my first novel, I received a ton of encouragement from a good work friend who is a general market indie author. I also joined my local branch of the American Christian Fiction Writer’s group and met some amazing authors there. Not only that, through social media and various online groups, I’ve “met” countless talented, supportive indie and Christian authors as well as bloggers.

SW: I love my local ACFW group. It's such a blessing to know you have others to cheer you along in your writing journey, isn't it? Do you have a writing space you can give us a peek into?

CF: One of my favorite places to write is the public library because it’s quiet and inspiring to be surrounded by so many books. As an added bonus, one of my local library locations has a coffee shop. The picture shows where I took a “little” snack break after a writing sprint.

SW: My library has some nice study rooms but no coffee shop. Plus it's never open when I'm ready to write. You write romantic suspense novels. Tell us something interesting you’ve learned while researching your books.

CF: Well, I hope I’m not getting too graphic here, but in my first book, a couple of characters get shot, but not killed. While researching gunshots wounds, I learned that there are really no “safe” gunshot wounds. Movies will often show someone being hit in the shoulder or arm and someone will say, “Oh, it’s only a flesh wound.” But in reality, factors like blood loss and risk of infection can make hits to even non-vital organs very serious indeed. Also, in real life, people rarely keep running around after being hit by a bullet like they do in the movies.

SW: Give us a brief overview of No Longer a Stranger.

CF: No Longer a Stranger centers on Marion Sloan, an uptight ex-cop, and EJ Handler, a lovable goofball and computer nerd. They cross paths when Marion is hired to find out who is sabotaging the company EJ works for. The unlikely alliance they form leads to old secrets, new dangers, and a surprising romance.

SW: Oh, I like the twist with the female "tough-guy." Are you working on another book now? What stage are you in with that?

CF: I am in the drafting stage of a book that I will be contributing to The Potter’s House Books Series 2. It will be an inspirational fiction novel with a hint of romance.

Thank you so much for hanging out with us this week, Chloe. I'm looking forward to reading No Longer a Stranger soon.

More about the Book

EJ Handler is the perpetual class clown, but he’s also a loyal friend and dedicated worker at the tech company he helped found. Friendship and work are the only commitments he needs. Yet a dangerous scandal quickly upsets his laid back life and dredges up the old heartaches that made him fear responsibility in the first place. His only hope rests in his faith and the reluctant assistance of a mysterious female detective.

Sloan is a tough, unemployed cop with a penchant for taking on the cares of the world by herself, when an unexpected job offer gives her the opportunity to do what she loves. Little does she know that a simple job will bring the infuriating, but endearing EJ and a chance at the friendships she’s avoided for so long.

Angela Couch: Historical Fiction to Melt Your Heart...And a Giveaway

I’m thrilled to have Angela Couch on The Diamond Mine today.

Doesn’t her cover art make you want to crack open her book to find out how deliciously wonderful her stories are? Let’s find out a little about her.

https://www.amazon.com/Return-Kings-Ranger-Hearts-War-ebook/dp/B07WGWR5CC/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=return+of+the+king%27s+ranger&qid=1567220098&s=gateway&sr=8-1

1.     Give me one fact about you as an author that most people don’t know.

I love a good fight (as long as a real person doesn’t get hurt). I’m a Second Dan Black Belt in Hap Ki Do and an instructor and love bringing a little bit of choreographing to the page with a good scuffle.

That’s a very interesting fact! I love reading a fight scene that is well done. Now, let’s see what else she has to say.

2.     As Christian writers, we long to share God’s love, goodness, and grace with others through our writing. But quite often our stories speak to us as much as our readers. How did God use this story to help you stretch and grow as a person?

Political tensions are pretty hot right now, but writing from both sides of a conflict remind me that most people are just people trying to get by. Their reasoning might not make a lot of sense on the surface but often there are deeper wounds and fears that made them who they are.

3.     Was there a scene you had to edit out which you really liked? Tell us about it.

Not in this book, that I can remember, but it is something I have done with other books. The Scarlet Coat went through many edits over the years (it was one of my earliest manuscripts) and while cutting is always painful, I do love the finished product!

4.     What is the quality you like the most about your heroine?

Her love of home and family. She’ll do whatever is necessary for the people she cares about.

5.     Being a writer is a busy life, isn’t it? I’m sure you’re working on something new to intrigue your readers. What’s in the works for you right now?

I’m very excited about a novella I am writing for Barbour Publishing called A Tempered Heart (1861—Charlottesville, Virginia)

Buried under a debt that is not his own, Thomas Flynn’s only focus is gaining his freedom. He has learned to keep his head low and not pay attention to the troubles of others, until a peculiar boy and his widowed mother show him how empty his life has become. After years of protecting her son from slights and neglect of the people closest to them, Esther Mathews is not sure how to trust the local blacksmith with her child…or her heart.

A Tempered Heart will release next spring in a novella set entitled: Blacksmith Brides. Keep a look out for it!

I live less than an hour from Charlottesville, so I'm excited about Angela's story. All you readers, get a copy today and find out what Angela has in store for all of her characters. A blurb to make you ready to buy:

The war for American freedom is over, and the British have gone back to England. Myles Cunningham wants to go home as well, not knowing what has become of his family since he was forced into the Continental Army nine years earlier. He returns to the Mohawk Valley with the understanding that he is believed to have been shot for deserting—fiction that might be made real if anyone recognizes him as the son of a Tory, and a King’s Ranger.

Everything is wonderful in the growing community along the Mohawk River, except Nora Reid is still alone. With her brother happily settled and both of her younger sisters starting families of their own, Nora feels the weight of her twenty-four years. A long walk leads her to the overgrown rubble of the Cunningham homestead where a bearded stranger begins to awaken feelings she’d lost hope of ever experiencing.

With secrets abounding—including whether Myles even cares for her—Nora must determine what she is ready to give up and how far she will go to secure his affections. She begins to break through his defenses, but Myles can’t risk staying. Not if he loves her.

Bio:
To keep from freezing in the Great White North, Angela K Couch cuddles under quilts with her laptop. Winning short story contests, being a semi-finalist in ACFW’s Genesis Contest, and a finalist in the International Digital Awards also helped warm her up. As a passionate believer in Christ, her faith permeates the stories she tells. Her martial arts training, experience with horses, and appreciation for good romance sneak in there, as well. When not writing, she stays fit (and warm) by chasing after three munchkins.
