Shoop, Shoop, Shooping with Kerry Johnson for Some Snowstorm Suspense!

Welcome! Set your ski poles by the door and waddle on in. We're ushering in snow with this new debut author, Kerry Johnson with her Love Inspired Suspense book, Snowstorm Sabotage. And Kerry is giving away one paperback book to one blessed person who leaves a comment or leaves their information on our contact form! Before we freeze over, let's find out more about our guest.

PT: So glad you are here this week, Kerry. Tell us about your genre, how you chose this it, and how the writing bug bit you.

KJ: I’d written several stories before signing my first book contract in 2020, and three of them are part of a middle grade speculative/adventure trilogy that’s near and dear to my heart. I adored writing the action scenes in those stories. I mean, I’d choose a Marvel movie over a rom-com most days (except Christmastime, when I love me some While You Were Sleeping). After writing the middle grade trilogy, I tried contemporary romance, a full length one and a shorter, category romance-length. Then an author friend nudged me to try writing romantic suspense—and I was hooked. It mixed exactly what I love most—action and romance.

PT: Suspense grabs us doesn’t it? Now, what’s your motivation for writing?

KJ: Books and stories feed my heart and soul. They’re inspiring and comforting. I grew up reading tons and making up stories in my head in the woods of Connecticut, talking to trees and acting out scenes. For many years, I truly thought I was a weirdo. Nope, I was just a budding author. 😊 Friends have told me I said I wanted to be an author even back in elementary school, so there you have it.

PT: What helped hone your writing craft?

KJ: Entering contests, writing more books (this is a biggie; don’t spend years focusing on one story like I did—keep writing more!), finding critique partners who have different strengths than I do, and reading craft books. Oh, and attending writing conferences! Those connections and friendships are so important.

PT: Where is Snowstorm Sabotage set?

Click to buy!

KJ: It’s set at a New England ski resort, in a fictional town in Vermont called Maple Creek.

PT: Have you been in a real live blizzard?

KJ: Yes, growing up in Connecticut we had a couple blizzards in the 80s. I enjoyed them because we got to make fires in our fireplaces and snuggle up together as a family, and of course, school was cancelled. Also, my toddler years were spent in Columbus, Ohio, and my parents often recount a huge blizzard in 1977, I believe? Or maybe 1978. Obviously, I don’t remember that one.

PT: Do you ski?

KJ: The ironic thing is that I’ve water skied but never snow skied. So, I watched lots of videos and researched snow skiing for Snowstorm Sabotage.

PT: Do any of the characters in the book have similar personality traits to you or someone you know?

KJ: I would say Everly, my heroine, is very independent and take-charge. I’m independent, too, though not as strong-willed as Everly. I’m not sure I’d be up for running a ski resort like she does.

PT: Is there an inspirational/Biblical theme in this book?

KJ: Yes. The verse I chose for Snowstorm Sabotage is 2 Corinthians 5:7, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” For Everly, it’s trusting God even though it feels like He’s abandoned her. For Isaac, my hero, it’s about recognizing he has value despite what others say about him, because God values him.

PT: What’s your current favorite Bible verse?

KJ: I have so many I pray and recite during the day, Prov. 3:5-6 being one of the main ones. But lately it’s been Psalm 147:3. “He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds.” My dad just passed away after a brief, difficult battle with cancer, and I’ve clung to this verse as my family and I mourn.

PT: On behalf of our readers and myself, we are so sorry to hear of your loss. Our prayers are with you and your family. So, what direction are you headed in now in terms of writing?

KJ: I’m currently finishing revisions for my next romantic suspense, then sending it to my editor at Love Inspired. I’m excited about this new story, and hopeful it turns into a series, because I so enjoyed creating these characters. For NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, in November), I’ll be finishing up a timeslip story that I started last year. For now, though, I love writing romantic suspense for Love Inspired!

PT: My favorite part! Tell 5 things about you that have nothing to do with writing.

KJ: I’m highly distracted by babies and animals.

I’m obsessed with peanut butter.

I love lizards of all kinds and would own ten if I had the room and money, etc…

I tell my bed I love you, bed at night sometimes (this is sadly not a joke. I just love that feeling of slipping into a comfy bed at the end of a long day, especially if it has newly washed sheets)

My husband and I went to high school together, but we never met until we both worked at a local Burger King. He made Whoppers and I did the drive thru. We were sixteen.

PT: Well, that's a wrap. Let's hit the slopes! (You know, turn on a Youtube fireplace and snuggle up to read Snowstorm Sabotage!)

Ho, ho, ho, Merry Christmas! So, without further ado, lets turn our sleighs toward Mary Alford’s interview.
                        ____________________________________

PT:  Season greetings, Mary! So happy to have you this week. I have my fireplace DVD on. Come settle by the fake fire and tell us the basics, your background and your genre.

MA: I write Christian and Amish Suspense for Love Inspired Suspense. I was a bookworm for as long as I can remember. I devoured every book that interested me at our public library. Growing up on Nancy Drew, Little House on the Prairie and Hardy Boys to name a few. From there, I graduated to Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney’s tales of suspense and romance. When I was a “tween”, I decided to write my own story because I was so sure I knew exactly how to do it. Wrong! It was filled with cliches and sappy romance, but it lit a fire in me that did not die through my teenage years and into adulthood. I tried my hand at different genres, but what I loved reading the most were Christian and Amish suspense. And so, I found my home there.

In 2012, I entered a contest through Love Inspired Suspense entitled, Speed Writing. I was chosen to pitch, then Emily Rodmell requested a partial, then a full, and in December of 2012, I received my first contract with Love Inspired Suspense. Forgotten Past was published in 2014. Since then, I’ve published 10 books through Love Inspired Suspense. The last 3 have been Amish Suspense. In addition, I am an Indie author of several Christian suspense novels. And in 2022, my first Amish Suspense will be published through Revell.

PT: Wow! Amazing. What a way to begin. I’m sure being chosen was like a gift. Such a fitting story in this gift-giving season. So, do you have a main reason/theme/mantra of writing? Include both Amish/Contemporary if you can.

MA: I think my love for both Christian Suspense and Amish drives me to write in these two genres. I learned early on to write what I loved to read, and it has served me well.

PT: Are there any characters in your books that resemble you most in personality? What about in Covert Amish Christmas? Or are there any scenes in the book that are taken from reality?

MA: I put a little of myself into every character I write. I cannot say it is one particular trait, but more like how they react to situations they are thrown into. Victoria Kauffman, in Covert Amish Christmas, in particular. And I find my characters usually share my love for coffee and cooking.

PT: Where did you get the idea for your Covert Amish Christmas?

MA: I love stories involving spies. There is just something about the danger they face that makes for a great book. Covert Amish Christmas is about a former CIA agent who is being hunted by the people she once worked for because of something they believe she knows about a failed mission in Afghanistan. What better contrast for the dangerous world of espionage, than the peaceful Amish community of West Kootenai, Montana, right? And a hero that doesn’t come from a military or intelligence background. Aaron Shetler is a simple Amish furnituremaker who refuses to let bad guys take Victoria’s life. And because of his willingness to help, a love story is born.

PT: Ah, sounds like the perfect novel to curl up with under a fuzzy, snowflake blanket. What’s the next project you are working on?

MA: Covert Amish Christmas introduces the reader to Aaron Shetler, the oldest of 5 Amish brothers who will be featured in additional upcoming Love Inspired books. The next book, Shielding the Amish Witness, comes out in April of 2021 and features Eli Shetler’s story. And in 2022, my first book from Revell will be released. It is an Amish Suspense, and I am extremely excited to get it into the hands of my readers.

PT: Exciting! Any special plans you yourself have for this year’s Christmas/or a gift you're planning?

MA: As I’m writing this, I’m preparing to decorate the house for the holiday. Usually, I am struggling with a deadline around the Christmas holiday, so it sometimes feels like I miss out on some of the beauty of the season. But not this year. I plan to enjoy every moment of the season. That, to me, is a gift.

PT: Yes. That is one thing this year has taught me. Time to enjoy every moment of life. Now, my favorite. It's like yanking down your stocking and finding all the little surprise trinkets inside! Tell 5 things quick about you that have nothing to do with writing.

MA: I am a grandmother of three, a pianist, a HUGE coffee drinker, a want-to-be crafter, and a sometimes-successful gardener.

PT: Let me ask you a very important question. Do you have a Bible verse that is your current favorite, one that speaks to you right now?

MA: My favorite verse of the Bible is John 14:1-3

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

What an amazing promise that Jesus Himself is preparing a place for us in heaven. I love that.

PT: I love that verse too, Mary. It speaks peace to my heart in this turbulent time. Thank you so much for stopping by the Mine and sharing your news and exciting giveaway!

Rocky Mountain Revenge and a Giveaway

Hi Rhonda,

Thanks so much for joining us today. Congratulations for Rocky Mountain Revenge! This is such a great story, and I'm excited to spend a little time with you today.

Where do you get your ideas for stories?
I get ideas from a variety of places. It could be a news story or simply just a brainstorming session. The idea for Rocky Mountain Revenge came about because I knew I wanted to have a heroine who wasn’t in law enforcement. I also knew I wanted to involve horses and ranches in my story, but I didn’t want that to be the main theme/setting. So, I started wandering what if my heroine was a veterinarian? Why would someone want to kill her? And the story evolved from there.

Have you ever been involved in a mystery? Witness to a crime of juror?
No

Who is your real-life hero?
Oh, that’s easy. My husband. I’m terrified of spiders. Mountain Man will always come running if I see one, and then he’ll take care of it for me. If it’s a harmless spider, he’ll catch it and set it free outside. I’m so scared of spiders I’d never get close enough to see if it was harmless or not. I’d squish it with a shoe. Hmmm…I guess spiders should appreciate him, too. J

Do you and your heroine have any similar traits?
No. She’s much braver than I am.

Tell us about your story.

Grace Porter hated growing up in a small town, so high school graduation she went to college and never really looked back. She’s veterinarian now who lives and works in Denver, but she’s needed back home temporarily to help out at her family veterinarian clinic. She arrives in Blackberry Falls only to discover someone ones both she and her sister dead. Now, Grace has to depend on her ex-boyfriend to keep her alive.

Evan Bradshaw is the chief of police. He’s a widower with a six-year-old son named Camden. Evan witnessed the murder of his wife a few years earlier, and now he’s faced with protecting his first love from a would be killer. All while keeping his son safe from harm.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse?

Philippians 3:13 “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,”

I love this verse because it reminds me not to look back on past mistakes, which I can’t change, but instead to focus on the things that are to come and the hope of eternity in heaven.

Rhonda, thanks so much for spending a little time with us today. It's been great!

Readers, Rhonda has been gracious to offer a print or Kindle copy of Rocky Mountain Revenge to a US reader. Just leave a comment below.
