Come to Call on Author Brandy Vallance

Welcome in my dear readers. What lovely attire you are sporting this beautiful morning. Please leave your parasols by the door while my servant, Gertrude, brings the tea and scones to the parlor.

We have an honored guest that I'm sure you all are quite anxious to meet. We have with us, Brandy Vallance, with her delightful debut novel, The Covered Deep. Without further ado, let us begin.

PT:  Most gracious of you to spend some time in our humble presence. We are most grateful. Could you please give us your background and how you started on this wild ride of writing.

BV:  It’s interesting how we can look back and see God’s hand on our lives. I originally wanted to be an archaeologist. History was my major in college but I always received my highest grades in creative writing. After my son was born, I had postpartum depression and writing became a very important aspect of my healing. I fell into stories and loved the escape. After months of writing I started wondering if writing could be my career. I took an apprenticeship through the Christian Writers Guild and then I ended up getting a couple staff jobs with magazines. I did freelancing for six years and then decided that I wanted to focus on the novel that I started all those years ago. That novel became The Covered Deep. It took fourteen years and eleven drafts before it was published. Today, I’d much rather be a novelist than an archeologist (although I’m still a total archaeology nerd). I’m so glad I get to spend time with my children and I love writing about history!

PT: I see. Now I was privileged to meet you at a writing conference. How do you think writing conferences help authors?

BV:  I have found that the best thing about writers’ conferences is the networking. I’ve made friends that will be friends for life. It’s so great to meet people who get you. Finding your tribe is a really powerful thing. We all need people to talk us off the ledge from time to time and no one gets writers like other writers.

PT:  I'll agree that a strong network makes all the difference. Tell us a little about, The Covered Deep.

BV:  The Covered Deep is a story that will be with me forever. To me, Paul and Bianca are so real. The story began in a couple of ways. I found a vintage photograph in an antique photography shop in Pensacola, FL. That photograph became Bianca in my mind. She was beautiful, but not conventionally beautiful. I saw sadness in her eyes but also strength. It was a lightning moment for me. The world faded away. Of course, with my love of history, I had to make Paul a historian. He’s a little bit Indiana Jones, which comes from my archaeology obsession. With my love of all things British, I wanted to see what would happen if I threw an Appalachian women into 19th century London. Then, I wanted an aristocrat to be a part of it all. More questions came from there and then I had the makings of the story.

You can see Bianca’s photograph here: https://www.pinterest.com/brandyvallance/the-covered-deep/

PT:  Is the Victorian Era the main genre you write in?

BV:  Yes! I’ve always been fascinated with the Victorian time period.

PT:  How do you keep up with the many rules and etiquette of that era?

BV:  Lots and lots of research! It once took me two weeks to find a bit of information that ended up being one line in my book.

PT:  Tell us about your travels.

BV:  I love to travel and experience other cultures. I’ve been to England, Scotland, Wales, Costa Rica, Cuba, Romania, Hungary and Canada. I’m pretty sure I have gypsy blood because my dream is to live all around the world. I get restless after living in a place for more than five years.

PT:  Give 5 things fast about Brandy Vallance that have little to do with writing.

BV:  My dream dog was always a Great Dane. We finally got one a year and a half ago. Nessie is named after the Loch Ness monster. She’s the best!

I love candles. When I have candles burning in my house I can instantly relax.

I feel more comfortable in historic houses. Modern art and modern architecture makes me cringe.

I have a scar on my leg from jumping on the back of a draft horse. It threw me into a barbed wire fence.

I love trying historical recipes. I once made chicken that Napoleon ate before the Battle of Waterloo. I typically cook elaborate meals when I’m procrastinating.

PT:  I understand you play the cello. Do instruments, or scenes with someone playing instruments find their way into your novels?

BV:  I did put a cello in The Covered Deep for that reason. I played the violin for a couple of years, but I was never in love with it. For me, the cello is soulful and deep. I had to become brave enough to play it. I don’t play much lately but whenever I hear cello music it makes me smile.

PT:  Tell us what goal you’re working toward right now in terms of writing.

BV:  I’m in the process of finding a home for my second novel, Within the Veil. In the meanwhile, I’m writing a Victorian time travel novella. The heroine is a bookbinder and it’s great fun! After that I’ll be writing my third, full-length historical romance. I plan to set that one on a tea plantation in British Ceylon.

PT:  Sounds wonderful! Lovely having you here at the Mine, Brandy. Thanks for stopping by. I'll have Gertrude make sure your carriage is brought around.

Readers, you know what else is wonderful?  Brandy is giving away a print copy of The Covered Deep! Yes, an honest to goodness, bonafide book! With tree-grown pages and real ink! What a privilege to own such a treasure! And all you have to do is leave a comment to enter the drawing. Let me show you the beautiful cover.

Bio:

Brandy Vallance fell in love with the Victorian time period at a young age, loving the customs, manners, and especially the intricate rules of love. Since time travel is theoretically impossible, she lives in the nineteenth century vicariously through her novels. Unaccountable amounts of black tea have fueled this ambition. Brandy's love of tea can only be paralleled by her love of Masterpiece Theater Classics, deep conversations, and a good book. Brandy is the 2013 Operation First Novel winner and the 2012 winner of the ACFW Genesis Contest for historical romance. Her critically acclaimed novel, The Covered Deep, has been featured in USA TODAY and Writer's Digest.

The Best of Both Worlds with Author, Julie B. Cosgrove

You might say Julie B. Cosgrove is an oxymoron.  No, no. I’m not name-calling here! I’m calling attention to the fact that she’s seen the best of both worlds! Perhaps I could call her a Barefoot Ballerina??? But you find out for yourself. Wink.

PT:  All right Julie. Everyone on the edge of their seats to find out what makes you so unique. Give us your background, including some juicy stuff (LOL)

JC:  I’m a native Texan and a true Gemini. During the school year my heritage embedded me into the
high society realm of San Antonio. My mother made me take flower arranging, Cotillion dancing, ballet, piano, and etiquette classes after school in order to prepare me for my proper  place in the social strata.
But from Memorial Day to Labor Day, I lived barefoot and carefree at my family cabin in the Texas Hill Country on the Guadalupe River. We installed indoor plumbing and hot water when I was about ten. I still recall boiling water for my daddy to shave and shuddering at the daddy longlegs bouncing in the corners of the outhouse. I became an expert at shooting water snakes and cacti, riding bareback, and dancing the Cotton-eyed Joe at the local rodeo on Saturday nights. Unless we went into town for church, my wardrobe consisted of pjs at night and a bathing suit with cut-offs during the day. My first novel, Focused is slightly biographical as far as the location.

PT:  What a great way to grow up, having the advantage of seeing two worlds. Let’s get to your books. How many books do you currently have out now?

JC:  Trick question. I have three novels, two of them with Prism Book Group called Hush in the Storm and Legitimate Lies, plus three more contracted in various stages of editing. I also have five non-fiction books: three Bible studies, one devotional on the Psalms called Song Notes, and one inspirational guide called Squeeze More God-Time Into Your Day. You can preview them all on my website www.juliebcosgrove.com or my blog hhtp://wheredidyoufindgodtoday.com

PT: I love throwing this one out there. Quick, give us five things about you that people don’t know and don’t necessarily have to do with writing.

JC:  1) I am a third daughter, born to the third daughter, born to the third daughter, born to the third daughter. Yep, I broke the mold by only having a son. My niece, however, birthed three daughters.
       2) I wanted to be a ballerina with the Bolshoi. However, raised during the Cold War era, my father was not pleased with the idea of his daughter dancing with Russians. Since I ended up only  5’1 and of stocky build, I guess it was for the best that he squelched my aspirations early on.
3.) I am a true Anglophobe, weaned on Earl Grey and cream. It is my heritage and denomination. My favorite authors growing up were all Brits. I love to snuggle up to a good British mystery be it in paperback or on Netflix or PBS.
4.) My husband died in the shower getting ready for work when we’d just moved to the DFW area less than a year prior to that.
5.) I love, love, love cats and would rather not be around dogs. My two “beastie Boys”, Buster and Black Kat, are my joy.

PT: Wow. That covered a lot. So sorry about your husband. I’ve gotta agree about the cats. Now lets go to the best place you’ve ever visited.

JC:  This will come as a giant surprise. I was blessed enough to go on a church sponsored tour of Southern England, and lived with an amazing couple for ten days in a fairytale Tudor village called Teffont just a short drive from Stone Henge. Each day, one of the villagers would accompany our private coach (a.ka.a bus) as we toured the area. Then  e sepnt four days in London.

PT:  Ahhh! Another British Chicky! LOL But let’s get back to right now. What’s the background of your current book?

JC:  Freed to Forgive launches now in October. It follows the story of an illegal teen who is trafficked to the U.S. at the age of twelve, and over the next ten years, struggles free from the shackles of sex slavery to discover she is worthy of love and a pearl of great price. But, the key to unlocking her emotional chains is forgiving those who trespassed against her. While the scenes realistically the world of trafficking, they are veiled as to hopefully not offend Christian readers. I cannot thank Prism Book Group enough for boldly contracting me to write this novel.

PT: I’ve read three of your other books and they are amazing. I love how you are letting people know about the inside nightmare that is sex-slavery right here in the United States. Future book plans?

JC:  I have the synopsis laid out for a cozy mystery series involving Bunco playing biddies in a 55+ community. The ring leader is concerned her son-in-law chief of police is way too over worked to spend quality time with her daughter and grandkids, so of course she has to help him solve the crimes, with a little help from her friends. I also have completed the first draft sequel to Focused, called Grounded and have plans for a third one called Rooted.

PT: So now you know why Julie B. Cosgrove is a delightful mix of opposites! And wait! There's even more!  This geneous author is giving away not only one book, but two of the series! This give you the leg up when her new installment arrives in October! Squeee! Leave a comment below to be entered to win BIG!

Interview and book giveaway with Gay N. Lewis!!

Sarah and a Midnight Cruise to Catalina Island

She can fly but can she swim? Dyslexic and bumbling angel, Sarah, comes to earth to unite Carolyn with a mate. Poopty doopty! She must do it on a ship while Carolyn cruises to Catalina Island. Sarah fears falling into the ocean, and she’s horrified soggy wings will drown her.  On this mission, Talen, an evil spirit is assigned to thwart Heaven’s Little Love Angel’s efforts. Tomas, the Warrior Angel, must protect Sarah. Can Tomas succeed without Sarah goofing up the war between the holy and unholy spirits? Will Talen succeed in spoiling Carolyn’s romance?

Today on The Diamond Mine, we're going to listen in on an interview with Sarah, the angel who stars in the series of books by Gay N. Lewis. So prepare for a fun ride on the Sarah roller coaster, and don' forget to leave a comment for a chance to win a copy of this delightful book. And here we go!!

Sarah has been making the rounds of television shows. She’s promoting the latest book about her, Sarah and the Midnight Ride to Catalina Island. A movie producer, Darcy DoGood, employed by Pie in the Sky contacted her producer, Gay N. Lewis, for an interview with Sarah. Gay made the arrangements and then recorded the dialogue.

Darcy:        I understand you’ve had many assignments on Earth. What was the latest one that brings you down here to us?

Sarah:       “My duties this time were soooo scary. I had to go on a cruise to Catalina Island and the sea makes me dizzy. I feared the ship might sink, or I might fall off the boat before the thing went into the deep like the Titanic did. Carolyn Baker, a college student who works in a mall, chose this trip for a vacation. Her dad had recently died, and she was grieving. Two men introduced themselves to her on board, and I had to discover which one was the right man for her.”

Darcy:        “You’ve done that before. What made this mission different?”

Sarah:        “I had a wicked spirit named Talen who wanted to thwart my efforts. I’d never tangled with an evil one before, so that complicated matters.”

Darcy:        “Now that sound chilling. What happened?”

Sarah:        “He has the same powers as me, but he uses them for evil. He appeared many times as a human. I used my spontaneity to prevent his moves, but he tricked me into going to Cloud Nine. He planned to banish me, but Tomas, the Warrior Angel, rescued me. If you’d been on Earth, you’d have seen an incredible lightening display taking place in The Heavenlies as the two clashed their swords.”

Darcy:        “I’m sure the fight presented a stormy scene to the watchers below. Did you goof up at all this time?”

Sarah:        “Oh my yes. Disguises are difficult for me. Carolyn and Nick toured Catalina Island, and I went with them in female form. People thought I resembled Dolly Parton, and I heard one woman tell another that I must have paid a fortune for my Botox. I guess she was talking about the brand of jeans I conjured up.”

Darcy:        “Anything else?”

Sarah:        “I accidently bopped into a hotel room and awoke a man and woman. I said that I was a therapist who made love connections. They told me they didn’t need any help and to leave immediately. I scared them when I disappeared.”

Darcy:        “You mentioned two suitors. Why was it difficult to decide which one was right for Carolyn?”

Sarah:        Carolyn lives in the Houston area, one of the men did too, but the other man came often on business. Both wanted to date her when she returned to Houston. They were both handsome and charming, and each of them tried to sweet-talk his way into Carolyn’s life, but I discovered one was dishonest.”

Darcy:        “We women must be careful when dating. Men can fool us.”

Sarah:        “Yes, especially when an unholy angel like Talen comes into the mix.”

Darcy:        “Will you read an excerpt for us?”

Sarah:        “Gladly.  This one is from Chapter Eleven. Nick, one of the suitors and Carolyn are standing on deck gazing at Catalina Island.
Sarah hovered above Nick and Carolyn as they enjoyed each other’s company on the upper deck until the middle of the night. Their attraction seemed to grow with each passing moment, but was it real or merely the ambience of the evening?
Nick glanced at his watch. “Almost midnight. You know what happens at that magic hour?”
“I turn into a pumpkin?”
Nick’s laugh rang out, deep and melodious. “No. Tradition of the islands says fair maidens should be kissed at midnight.”
“I didn’t read that in any brochure. You’re making that up.”
“No, kissing on a ship at midnight with an island as a backdrop is a new ritual.”
“Oh, really. Whose?”
“Mine. I just established it.”

Darcy:        “Nick sounds charming. Did he win the hand of the fair maiden?”

Sarah:        “Sorry. I can’t say. You have to read the book. Gay N. Lewis would not be pleased if I told you everything.”

Well that was a fun glimpse into this latest adventure with Sarah! Don't forget to leave a comment so you'll be entered in the drawing! Here's a little about Gay N. Lewis, followed by her social and purchase links:

Interview and two-book giveaway with Rebecca DeMarino!!

In an uncertain time, Heather Flower faces a choice that will change her life forever
It is 1653 and Heather Flower, a princess of the Montaukett tribe, is celebrating her wedding feast when a rival tribe attacks, killing the groom and kidnapping her.  Though her ransom is paid by an Englishman, she is bound by her captors and left to die—until she finds herself rescued by handsome Dutch Lieutenant Dirk Van Buren.

Still tender from her loss, Heather Flower begins to heal in the home of the Hortons, English friends of her people. Torn between her affection for Dirk and her longtime friendship with Ben Horton, Heather Flower must make a difficult choice—stay true to her friend or follow her heart.

Welcome author Rebecca DeMarino to The Diamond Mine! Rebecca will be giving away a print copy of her first two books in her Southhold Chronicles Series. Today we'll focus on the second book of the series: "To Capture Her Heart." To enter for a chance to win both great books, leave a comment for her!

Rebecca write about: Love, Legends, and Lore!
Now Let's learn a bit about Rebecca!
Welcome to the Mine, Rebecca! Let's talk about your book. Yhe second book is set in 1653. How did you get the idea to set this story at that point in time?

My time period was set by the series, which is based on the real lives of my ninth great-grandparents. They came over on a little ship called The Swallow in the 1630’s. My plan for the series was to take each book about the Hortons up a decade or two. While researching the first book in the series, A PLACE IN HIS HEART, I discovered a gold nugget of information about Heather Flower, the daughter of the Montuakett sachem, who was kidnapped on her wedding day by a fierce rival tribe. Tradition has it that the Englishman, Lion Gardiner, paid her ransom. The story was too good to ignore!

Wow!! You said it! What type of research did you do for this story?

I do extensive research. I thought that for the second book it wouldn’t be as intense, but I was wrong. Not a bad thing, though, because I love it! So many things changed from decade to decade in seventeenth century New England. And I was intrigued by the fact that Long Island during the 1650’s was literally divided down the middle with the Dutch on the west end and the English on the east end.  And they didn’t always get along! Some research has been done online (amazing what you find in Google!) some I have traveled back to Long Island to discover, and my favorite tool is books! I have stacks of books in my personal library now on the history of Southold, Long Island, New Amsterdam and Connecticut. I would love to have family diaries or letters, but they don’t  exist even in museums for the 1600’s. But I have studied accounts of Plymouth (Plimoth) and other early colonies that are better documented and that helps!

I love the research part for writing historicals, too! I’m not too familiar with the Montauk people. Can you tell us a bit about them, and about your main character, Heather?

The Montauketts were a people who inhabited the south fork of Long Island in the 1600’s. There were several tribes on Long Island and it is said there were four sachems, all brothers. The Montaukett sachem was called the Grand Sachem by the English immigrants because he was the elder and made the final decisions. His daughter was Quashawam, and some have called her Heather Flower. The English called her a princess because she was the daughter of the Grand Sachem – who in the English way of thinking was a king!

What are the main challenges facing Heather?

By the time Heather Flower has been rescued in the opening scene she has witnessed the murder of her groom on her wedding day and she has been left for dead by her captors.  Her rescuers – one Dutch and one English – know she needs to heal but in their attempt to protect her they cannot help falling in love with the beautiful Montauk Princess.

Sounds awesome! Do your characters develop as you write, or do you have a clear idea of them before you start?

A little of both were at work in this story. In reading about the tall and eloquent Montauketts, I knew from the outset what qualities Heather Flower would possess. She was also the daughter of royalty, but as her character developed I discovered she was not spoiled, even though she was revered by her people. And she was not immune to loss.

How much of yourself is in your characters?

That is such a hard question. I think it would be hard for anyone to write without traces of them in it. Heather Flower emerged as someone I admire, but I don’t see much of me in her!

How many books do you plan for this series?

The Southold Chronicles is a three-book series. I just turned in the manuscript for book #3 and I’m very excited about it. The Horton story moves up to 1664 – the year England takes over New Amsterdam on the west end of Long Island and becomes New York City! How fantastic is that?! And of course, as are the first two books, it is historical romance!

You picked a pretty incredible era to write about! What made you decide to write this series?

Growing up, my mother told me stories of my ninth great-grandfather who came over from England in the 1600’s on a ship called The Swallow. In 1999 we discovered a lighthouse was named after him in Southold, L.I. and I took my mother back to see it. We learned so much about him at the lighthouse museum, the library and the historical society and even visited his grave at the cemetery. We were both fascinated to see the family lore come to life. But there was nothing about my ninth great-grandmother - not even her grave. We knew Barnabas was a widower with two young sons when they married, and from there a story jumbled around in my head. And I knew I wanted to give her a voice. From there I wrote  A PLACE IN HIS HEART, my debut novel.

And you've turned your own history into a real treat for your readers! What do you want readers to take away from your stories?

I love writing historical romance because there is something for the romantic, there is something for the historical fan, and there’s something for people who just enjoy a great read. A spiritual theme that seems to weave itself into my stories is this: No matter what your situation is, what the challenges are, God is with you. You might still go through the fire, but He will hold your hand. You will make it.

That's a beautiful theme! What are you working on now?

I turned in my third manuscript to my publisher last night.it will now go through the editorial process so there’s still work to be done. The projects I’ll turn my attention to now are all historical romance!
Thank you so much for having me today! I enjoyed the interview!

And I enjoyed your answers. Thanks so much for sharing some of yourself with us today!  Readers, don't forget to leave a comment for your chance to win two books!

Here's an excerpt from: To Capture Her Heart:

He settled himself atop his own bedding, tucking his musket close to his side. The ground was hard and the night alive with cricket chirps. Somewhere an owl hooted. He propped his hands beneath his head and stared at the heavens. The night was warm and the ink sky a dance of thousands of winking stars. An astral display fell as if the sky had parted. Some Indians believed it to be a sign of travel heroes and he glanced over to the still form of Heather Flower and hoped she’d seen it. He asked God for travel mercies as sleep claimed him.
****
Heather Flower was awake before the sun rose. The crescent moon had set hours ago, but the crisp stars still illuminated the sky. She crept toward the glow of the fire and sat. She clutched the comb Dirk had given her the day before and began to pull it through the tangles in her hair. Strand by strand the snarls came undone. As the men began to stir around her, she finished a long braid over her shoulder.
