Diggin' in the Dirt with Susan Sleeman

The Purveyor of Tomatoes?

I'm so happy to be back on the Diamond Mine, folks. It’s great to see you! It’s good to be back with the Diamond Mine. Life hasn’t been kind but then since when is life anything but? I know I can always find solace in the Lord’s fold and that’s exactly what the Diamond Mine was created to be . . . a special place. The Diamond Mine is where Words are more than letters on a page and when God speaks, all are willing to hear.
For right now though, I know an amazing suspense writer I’d like you to meet. She is known for her many crime novels and series which are dead-on for authenticity. Many don’t realize that this author is a graduate of the FBI Citizen's Academy as well as other local law enforcement academies which gives credence to the action-filled plotlines and life-like characters filling her books. If you don’t know Susan Sleeman through her books, then you may know her as host of TheSuspenseZone.com. Either way, I rest assured that you’ll love this Purveyor of Sleuth as much as I do.
GIVEAWAY!!!
When the sunsets, justice wins the day, and Susan hangs her hat in Oregon with her retired church music director of a hubby, two beautiful daughters, an incredibly special son-in-law, and an adorable grandson. She snuggles into her big comfy couch as those big doors close and keep the evil world at bay . . . at least for a while.
So— to celebrate my Diamond Mine Homecoming, please welcome Susan Sleeman to the couch! Oh, and as part of all my Gemstone Interviews, don’t forget to check out the “special information” at the end of the chat! That’s geek-speak for GIVEAWAY!!! 😉

ONWARD AND UPWARD! Let’s meet Susan now.

Interview

RB: Hi, Susan and welcome to the Diamond Mine. I’m excited to be back on board here and even more to have you as my guest! You are quite the suspense and crime author and we have so much to talk about today. How about I stop jabbering so we can get started?

SS: Wow, thanks for the introduction. You’d make a camel blush with all those fancy words. It’s me who is honored, and I’m thrilled to be here as well.

SUSAN SLEEMAN
RB: You are welcome. You deserve it and more. I’d like to start out this interview by getting to know you and I’m sure the readers would like to do the same. So, Susan, if you could say one thing about yourself and your books, what would it be?

SS: First and foremost, I would want readers to know I am a Christian and love God. I hope this shows in my books. I don’t set out to write a Christian book, but my faith is such a part of my life that I can't not include it. In fact, I have written one secular series, and not including my faith and a message of hope and change was the hardest thing I have ever done as a writer.

RB: I would have to agree. I don't think I could omit the very thing in my life that gives me the strength to breathe. I wish I could hike into the mountains and breathe in that cool, clear mountain air. That's what I usually do when I need time alone with the Lord. Do you have a special place for the two of you? Or a place you'd like to visit?

SS:  Mmmm... (A brief silence ensued. Suddenly a sharp sound reverberated through the stillness when Susan snapped her fingers.) England, I've always wanted to travel to England. I'm a big BBC TV fan and I would love to visit some of the small villages I see in the shows. And my hubby's family is from Cornwall so I would like to see that area too.

RB: I love to watch BBC as well! My husband and I got hooked on a show this last year through Prime called Poldark. It was great to watch one of these shows again! My dream is to go to Scotland, my husband's homeland, well, his not so distant ancestors' homeland. ;) I should've known that man was a Scot when I met him! His hobbies gave him away - coaching and officiating USA wrestling, hunting, fishing, debating, apologetics. I liked to read and hang out with my friends at the time!
Speaking of hobbies, what do you like to do when you aren't writing and editing your awesome tales, Susan?

SS: Yes, I have a favorite hobby. I love to garden. Both flower and vegetable gardening. I love spending time outside, seeing God's handiwork as the flowers unfurl and the seeds sprout to produce organic fruits and vegetables for my family. To outwit squirrels who love to steal my first tomatoes and strawberries of the year., and the birds who think I have planted raspberries and blueberries just for them. Oh...and I also just plain love digging in the dirt. Maybe I didn't get enough of it as a child. LOL
And I enjoy trying out new varieties of plants. and foods. These purple tomatoes are just like God's jewels in the garden. in the garden.

RB: Diggin' in the dirt... that sounds like so much fun! I can see how that would be a great hobby. Talk about getting back to the basics! LOL
I guess we have to talk books now (winks), so . . . . turning to the writing side of your life now, what is your biggest challenge as an author?

SS: At this point in my career as an author, I have written over forty published books and another five that will never be seen. I write romantic suspense so coming up with unique and exciting plot twists is becoming a challenge. I can easily come up with an overarching plot, but the nitty-gritty details that move the story forward is getting harder for me to develop.

RB: I can see that being a challenge. And your characters?

SS: I always write in a series. So before I begin the series, I create the traits of all the main characters. I make sure they are all different in what drives them, and then I begin to ask them questions like what's your greatest fear or what do you want most in life?

RB: And in your books, they achieve these things?

SS: Sometimes, and in others, no. I do my best to create situations where their characteristics are displayed and show how they must change and grow. I put them with the lead character who is their opposite to provide instant conflict and a chance to show how they must change and grow to be their best self. Much like how we - in the real world - are challenged with dilemmas and must make similar decisions when faced with the same adversity. In many ways, I believe that makes the characters not only interesting but, for the most part, just as real.

RB: And I believe you do an amazing job at it, Susan. An amazing job! I have one last question for you and I'll let you go back to your digging in the dirt. If for some unforeseen reason you could not write anymore, what would you do? Would you continue in the "writing world" professionally?

SS: If I could not write novels, I would not have a writing career. Period. I am not at all interested in writing for other publications or short stories, etc. It's just not my thing.
So if I could no longer write, I would either retire or go into graphic design. I have basic design skills, but would have to get a degree to do it well, and that in itself would be fun and interesting for me.

RB: You sound like a determined, interesting lady and I wish you the best. Thanks for being here on the Diamond Mine with us!

SS: Thank you for allowing me to share my writing and life on your wonderful blog, Renee. I am happy to offer your readers a print copy of Seconds to Live. This is Book One in my HOMELAND HEROES series and it was just recently named a finalist in the FHL Reader's Choice Award in their Romantic Suspense Category. Interview with Debut Author: Kaitlin Covel

Hello, friends!! I'm so glad you're here to visit with Kaitlin and me today. As always, I have a pot of hot tea and platter of fresh scones with jam and clotted cream to offer you. Go ahead and curl up in a wingback chair or if you want to get fancy, I have a couple beautiful antique Victorian chairs and a settee.

One of my favorite things to do is to interview debut authors. Kaitlin's debut novel, Atoning for Ashes, hit the shelves just in time for Valentine's Day, and now she has graciously agreed to visit today.

Kaitlin Covel has a thirst for adventure much like the heroines of her stories. She is an old-fashioned romantic, and if she could time travel to any historical period, it would be the Regency Era. Here in the 21st century, she is a certified Nutritional Therapy Technician, but writing is her passion, whether it's fiction or non-fiction. Her debut novel, Atoning for Ashes, released on February 14th, 2019 from Deep River Books. She has honed her craft since childhood, benefiting from the insights of other writers through professional writing associations such as the Jerry Jenkins Writer’s Guild and Hope*writers. She lives with her family in Maine, where she enjoys teaching the teen Sunday school class at her church. Her favorite things are family, books, history, chocolate, music, the ocean, and strong cups of tea. Visit her at www.kaitlincovel.com.

Crystal: So Kaitlin, What was the best advice someone ever gave you about writing, life, or anything that strikes your fancy?

Kaitlin: One of the greatest pieces of writing advice I ever received was to write until I was confident enough of my writing skills to share them with the world. I wrote short stories and several novels to practice my skills. I engaged in writing memberships and contests to polish my craft until I knew I was ready to attempt publication. This journey has taken me almost ten years, but I have loved every moment of it. I look forward to the next chapter of my publishing journey and all the new experiences that await me. I know I am doing what I was born to do!

Crystal: Great advice! It takes a lot of hard work to get a good story pulled together and written.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Kaitlin: My dream job as a child was to be a published author and see my books on a library shelf. I thank God for making my dream come true!

Crystal: That is so great God planted that seed to write while you were young. I bet there were many stories written in crayon.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse?

Kaitlin: Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, for he shall direct thy path."  I love this verse because it is a daily reminder to trust the Lord and rely upon Him in all circumstances. Life is complicated, but I know the Lord will direct my path if I acknowledge him in all my ways.

Crystal: That is a great verse, and one that we all have to lean into on the difficult days (and the not so difficult days as well.

Josie Chadwick dreams of marrying for love in Cornwall, England, but with her father's debt threatening to destroy all she holds dear, her romantic options are dwindling. When her elder sister Delia is disowned, Josie finds herself heiress of Chadwick Park, torn between dreams and duty. After sacrificing her heart to atone for Delia's sin, Josie clings to the hope she will learn to love a distant husband, whom she fears is incapable of requiting her affection.
Charles Radcliffe's heart has been scarred and hardened by rejection. He fears hurting his new bride, but his fears of betrayal and rejection are stronger, making it impossible for him to trust her love―let alone the love of her God.
As Josie and Charles face their new life together, ominous events warn of dark family secrets that could shatter them both. More than a loveless marriage is at stake if they cannot stand as one. Will they learn to trust God and each other before it's too late?

Getting to Atoning for Ashes, did God teach you anything through the writing of it?

Kaitlin: God taught me so much through writing this story that I don’t even know where to begin… I think the biggest lesson God taught me in writing Atoning for Ashes was the unconditional nature of His love. I’d never really meditated on this aspect of our God, but because several main characters in my book struggle with a crisis of identity, I reflected on the unconditional nature of my God’s love and grace more than I ever had before.

Crystal: How do you select the names of your characters?
Kaitlin: I like to look at the census for the year my story is set if it is available. I’m always taking note of unusual period names when I’m watching period dramas or reading classic literature/biographies/memoirs. For surnames, I do a lot of research based on the setting, and I have fun exploring historical documents from the time period. It is a struggle, but I persevere until I’m satisfied with the ring of each characters’ full name!

Crystal: Thank you so much for sharing with us today!

Readers, Kaitlin is graciously giving away a print copy of Atoning for Ashes to one lucky commenter. Just respond with your email address below and the winner will be notified the week of March 27th. Thank you so much for stopping by for a cup of tea and a chance to meet this debut author!

Daphne Self - An Author of Many Colors (Multi-book Giveaway)

Daphne Self - An Author of Many Colors

Daphne Self

Hello there, readers! I bring a special treat to the Mine today. Get ready? Drum roll anyone? I offer you none other than Christian Fiction and Children’s author, Daphne Self. You may know of her under former pen name D.M. Webb. She has such a beautiful spirit and I can’t wait to get started. So, let’s do this!

🐶 *** 🐶 *** 🐶

RENEE: Daphne, welcome to the Diamond Mine. I’m so glad you could join us! Why don’t you tell the readers a little about yourself before we get started with the interview?

DAPHNE: Hi, Renee, thank you! I’m so excited to be here. Of course! I’m an author of two children’s books (I Lost My Hat and The Case of the Missing Firehouse Dog), two novels (Mississippi Nights and Alabama Days [TBD]), and a devotional (30 Days: A Devotional Memoir). For about 39 years I lived in Mississippi, until my husband and I decided to try the adventurous lifestyle of living in Iowa: from humid hot nights to bitter cold nights. I do enjoy my new home state, though. And we are still exploring it despite living here for almost 5 years.

RENEE: Iowa is a beautiful place to live. I always enjoyed visiting when my aunt lived there. Wow, I didn’t realize that have published across the genre field, from children to devotional and everything in between. What would you say is the biggest challenge as an author?

DAPHNE: I have many challenges but as an author? I would have to say it’s the actual sitting down to write. I’m a master of distractions, but I know if I make myself sit down and concentrate, then I can get a good hour to two hours of writing in which usually churns out 500 to 2500 words.

RENEE: “Master of distractions,” what an awesome term. I may have to use that in the future if you don’t mind. We may need to get together so you can instruct me on how you “make yourself concentrate.” I can’t seem to “master” that one! In fact, I haven’t been able to write a lick for a long time. Speaking of that, have you ever thought of what you would do if you could write anymore?

DAPHNE: That’s a good question. If I couldn’t write anymore, I would edit or find another way to work in the publishing industry. I love books too much to be away from them.

RENEE: Me too. I can’t imagine not assisting others to make their dream of becoming a published author or simply writing “The End” come true. I’ve always found caring and helping people the best part of any job I’ve ever had, voluntary or not. What do you like the most about your job? Is there anything you don’t like?

DAPHNE: I have two jobs in publishing, one as editor, the other as author. As an editor, I love helping other authors polish their work and help strengthen their writing. Plus, I get to read the books before anyone else. The downside: I am sometimes swamped with work (a good thing) but that can cause an itsy bit amount of stress (not a good thing.)
As an author, I love this job. The only thing I dislike is that I come up with too many ideas for books that I don’t have the time to write. I have a journal with so many ideas and they just keep coming!

RENEE: In reality, that’s a good thing though, right? It’s better to have too many ideas than not enough! And you can combine a few ideas and make one awesome novel. LOL Have you ever read a novel or story and though to yourself, “Man, I wish I’d thought of that one!” You know, that favorite book you read in that favorite spot that stuck with you forever?

DAPHNE: I always laugh because I get this question a lot and I don’t have an answer. I don’t have just one favorite book. I have many. And the list keeps growing. When I feel like reading, but want some familiar, like an old friend or warm blanket, I choose a book off my collection shelf to read. I don’t have a particular – favorite - place to read either. I’m happy wherever if it’s comfortable and I have a glass or cup of tea by my side.

RENEE: Simple things are the best, but if my front window had a little with a padded seat and warm fleece blanket, that would become my “favorite” spot! I could curl up with a book and feel the winter sun on my face and watch the ice crystals melt slowly from the window panes to reveal a snowy vista (my front yard with Christmas balls hanging from my pathetic baby tree.) I love reading, can you tell? What’s some hobbies you like to do?

DAPHNE: I like to paint. I’m experimenting with watercolor crayons at the moment. I plan to use them for the next book in my children’s series. It’s been a while since I picked up a brush, but I have the desire to do so now. I usually like to paint landscapes (a Bob Ross flair) or abstract images. I do have one that I don’t like, but everyone who sees it says it’s captivating. So, I keep it on my wall to remind me that it’s the emotion that shows through the painting and not the technique.

RENEE: I love to paint too! I picked it up soon after my CRPS diagnosis and I couldn’t write. I needed something to vent all the emotions pent up within my soul. Landscapes are my favorite as well, but they take a long time for me to do so I love to paint with the acrylic pour techniques. I know what you mean though about emotion and putting it all out there. Sometimes, what you think is raw and ugly, others find amazing and gorgeous. People are so different, aren’t they? What makes one person tick, doesn’t phase another. I mean look at dogs and cats for example. I know people who hate cats but love dogs and vice versa, and then there are those who love both. Hey, do you like dogs or cats? Do you have any pets?

DAPHNE: I have quite a few pets, but my newest edition is Lord Yu. He comes from the line of Mustard. To tell this story I will have to start with the life of Somebody, our mischievous and deeply loved orange cat. Somebody was born to Sam, who was impregnated by the neighbor’s orange cat we dubbed Mustard. Although Somebody died a couple of years later, when we went down to visit my in-laws not too long ago, my mother-in-law’s cat had kittens. I saw the orange cat and wanted it. When we picked him up three months later, I realized how closely he resembled Somebody, stripes, patterns, color, and even eye color. I realized that Mustard must have been quite busy, and this was one of his descendants. We named him Lord Yu after a Stargate SG-1 character and life has been interesting since then. Lord Yu lives up to his name. He’s talkative, can be a bully, completely lovable sweetheart at times, afraid of heights, and is slowly becoming addicted to the tub. We call Lord Yu “our little feline human”.

RENEE: Oh, wow, Lord Yu! He sounds like a ham of the feline variety. Don’t tell me you are a Stargate fan too?! Daphne, we are going to have to meet someday. I’d love to keep going but we’d never stop if I don’t watch it. How about we wrap up and save the rest of our questions for another day?

DAPHNE: LOL Absolutely! That sounds like a good plan to me. Please, do connect with me. I love to connect with my readers and fellow authors. I can talk books, art, space, sci-fi, romance, pirates, and all kinds of things all day long! And yes, I am a “Stargate Fan.”

RENEE: I meant to ask you, but I forgot . . . are you planning a giveaway for our readers?

DAPHNE: YES! In fact, I would like to giveaway TWO books!
One of them is my children’s book, The Adventures of Wilhelmina: The Case of the Missing Firehouse Dog.
The next book I’m giving away is Mississippi Nights, my debut novel that was published in 2012.
This giveaway is in celebration of signing the contract for my next book, Alabama Days.

RENEE: Woohoo! Congratulations, Daphne! What about that, folks? Daphne will be writing and releasing another book soon! Wowzers. Well, thanks for coming to the Mine, Daphne, and without more waiting, here we go – to the GIVEAWAY!
