It’s St. Patrick’s Day and Kelly Goshorn is “BACK” ON THE MINE!

WELCOME TO THE DIAMOND MINE, KELLY . . .  AGAIN!

I asked my church to point me toward people that might be isolated, people I could reach out to and pray for. I volunteered with the local food pantry and once a week I make deliveries with a friend from church to families in need. This helped me shift my attention away from myself and toward others—to ‘count my blessings’ as it were rather than focusing on whatever I perceived I’d lost or had changed since COVID-19 came into our lives.

RENEE: I’m grateful to the Lord that you recognized the depression and acted upon it with the Church. Our Christian Family if people would simply recognize it, are caring and loving people God places in our lives for much more than Sunday and Wednesday (and simply to be a thorn in our side as so many in this fallen world believe.)

It’s also in the hard or tough times that we take the small things for granted like the Sunday morning person who sits in the pew behind us with the ever-faithful smile for a greeting, that creek-bed we used to fish in as a child and haven’t done so for years, the mountains we see on our drive to work every way but don’t have time to bother take our children for a weekend picnic... 

Yeah, it’s times like these that we “count our blessings” and remember the things we have around us not for the first time but have had all the time and have simply taken advantage of or forgotten along the way.

That’s a lesson I learned quite a while ago when I became disabled and unable to work or do much else. Instead of the mountains I loved to run around and play in, I picked up other hobbies like painting and making soy candles!

I don’t have much time or ability to write my books, although I have been researching brainstorming on two new series involving the genres of historical and science fiction. Can you believe that, Kelly? Science fiction! That’s me, eclectic! LOL

You know me, I can’t just wilt into the bed or recliner, my mind is constantly going even if I can’t remember what I’m doing half the time. I have even begun advocating for those with Chronic Pain and Rare Diseases like mine, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or Causalgia. So many of us are not receiving adequate pain management that I couldn’t keep silent any longer and had to say something as an educated medical provider, a pharmacist, and a patient.

So, your turn! What’s happening in your wheelhouse? Any new series, books, or exciting news for us to know about? I know you are a busy woman as well!

KELLY: I’m so proud of you for getting involved and advocating for Chronic Pain and Rare Diseases. I think it’s wonderful that you’re working hard to improve life for yourself and others, some of whom may not be able to advocate on their own behalf.

As for me, I’ve been working on a three-book series set locally in historic Loudoun County, Virginia, where I grew up and which also provides the setting for my debut novel, A Love Restored.

Loudoun was a border county in a border state. While the county as a whole voted for secession, the western part of the county that borders what would become the state of West Virginia, was home to many Quakers. As you may have guessed, they voted to remain in the Union. This gives a historical romance writer like myself plenty of tension-filled scenario opportunities including the historic Burning Raids which will be featured in book one of the series.

In late November and early December 1864, Union cavalry troops tore through the area burning barns, confiscating crops and livestock, and slaughtering what they couldn’t take with them—anything they thought could be used to aid the enemy whether the civilians were Confederate sympathizers or not.

Writing historical romance requires a lot of research and if the procrastination bug bites, my faithful Welsh corgi, Levi, always manages to herd me toward the computer again.

RENEE: I can see why you love historical if you have things like that spurring you along! Not the bugs, but Levi! He’s a great research buddy to have along. LOL I do have one question for you and may sound a little “controversial” but since I want to write historical and our readers love it as well, I’m going to go for broke!

Life in the USA Today

As you know, life isn’t easy for me or many people lately. I could list the things wrong, but one things that’s always been right has been the Lord.  He remains my strength and guiding Light.

In today’s environment of “cancel culture” and freedom of eliminating, rewriting, or simply ignoring whatever incidents in the present, or past that we don’t like, how do you see His Light affecting the world and in essence, you?

Sin is consuming this world like it did with Sodom and Gomorra in the Bible. Please tell the fans and readers your opinion of the future of this country amidst the decadence around it and us. Is there reason to retain hope?

Is Love and Hope Still Around Us?

KELLY: While I do have serious reservations about the direction our country is headed with the current level of political discord and what I consider a dangerous trend toward curtailing free speech, we need to remember that our hope isn’t found in the latest social or political movement nor is it found in government mandated policies. I think our culture places too much value on the opinions of trending celebrities, political movements, and even men and women in elected office. These things, these people won’t save us. Who are they but sinful human beings, just like us, but most of whom are not connected to the source of truth? The enemy will use anything or anyone to stir up fear, so we turn our eyes, and eventually our hearts, away from God—our only source of lasting peace and joy no matter our circumstances. 

Instead, I find hope in the knowledge that God is working behind the scenes for our good and His glory. Nothing that happens takes Him by surprise. And despite the upheaval of the last year, I see that His people are resilient because our lives are built on a firm foundation, one that doesn’t shift and can’t get “canceled” no matter how unpopular our views become in our culture. His Word is that foundation and the only source of peace and truth I know. “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.” Psalm 62:5 (NIV)

RENEE: Thank you, Kelly. Even though we know it in our hearts, it’s good to hear someone else say the words aloud. We may not see God working. The enemy’s actions are evident for all to see because he is pompous and arrogant . . . Loves attention and hates God. And oh, yes, our hope does come for the Almighty Lord Jesus. Thank you for the words. I needed to hear them touch my ears.

Before we go, is there something you would like to say to the Mine about you and your life? Writing? After all, you are an awesome Christian author and don’t want anyone to miss out on the chance to become a fan, Kelly!

KELLY: I’d sum up my life as a work in progress. Although I’ve been a Believer for over 40 years, I’m still learning whatit means to walk with God faithfully, to fully submit my desires to His will. As God reveals those areas of my life that I need to surrender to Him, I’ve often found that my personal journey unfolds in my books.

In fact, that is the very idea behind the working title for the series I mentioned above, Surrendered Hearts. Through themes of surrender and sacrifice, I examine what happens when God calls us to lay down those things we hold most dear—our dreams and ambitions, our pride, a relationship, and ultimately our hearts as God recklessly pursues each of us.

My characters discover, just like I have, that this journey with God that we call life has the potential to transform us and to restore our relationship with othersand with Him if we are brave enough to submit our stubborn will to His.

My deepest hope is that God will carve a similar path for those readers who take the journey with me in the pages of my stories.

Renee: Hi April, welcome to the Diamond Mine! I'm so happy you're here. For those new to the Christian Fiction world, how about a quick introduction?

April: My name is April McGowan, and I am a contemporary women’s fiction author with a heart to write about the wounds we carry and God’s great healing providence.

Renee: And quite the gifted author you are! I'd love to talk about how you do that...write about our wounds and God's healing. What makes your latest book, Hold the Light special, possibly in that regard?

April: My book centers on a young artist and her dealing with losing her sight, finding her place again in the world, and reestablishing her footing with God. She feels like He’s taken the gift He gave her away—I think it speaks to anyone who had plans for their lives and were forced to change them due to circumstances outside their control. I’m not afraid to ask the hard questions—and I am secure knowing God has all the answers.

Renee: Yes, He does have all of them, doesn't He? If we are brave enough to accept them, no matter what they may be. Your artist sounds like an interesting character, a deep one. How do you make and keep your characters "three-dimensional," if you understand my meaning?

April: I make sure to really know my characters inside and out before I begin writing. They have flaws and wounds. They suffer from brokenness—but they also harbor hope. I usually draw on real experiences around me to embed them in, and write from my own pain and hopes and joys.

Renee: That's a great place to start any story...the characters. I've tried other places as well as techniques but they just fall short. What would you say is your biggest challenge as an author?

April: My biggest challenge comes from living with chronic illness. I have Common Variable Immunodeficiency Disease—a genetic condition that keeps my body from producing antibodies, so I can’t fight colds or infections. Because of sickness and fatigue, I can’t write every day, and that makes is difficult to finish….anything! But, by God’s grace, He lifts me up and strengthens me for the tasks He puts before me. Even if I don’t get to do what I want to do, I know He is with me.

Renee: Wow, April, that's called "walking through fire." I admire you for remembering who gives you the strength to face the day and to write your stories. God is so good. What would you do if you couldn't write anymore?

April: I’ve thought about that often—which is embedded in my story about Amber and losing her sight. What would it be like if I got so sick I couldn’t do what I loved anymore? I’ve had to give up many things I’ve loved due to illness. So far, though, writing has stayed. And I’m going to keep going, even if it’s only a chapter a month, until I’m done.

Renee: And enjoy every minute of it! Do you have any hobbies?

April: I love reading and I enjoy drawing and playing board games. I’m also a novice drummer—with high aspirations, but little energy. Still. I love it.

Renee: I remember the time we bought our son a drum set. His aspirations for being the best neighborhood drummer didn't last long. Maybe two months? Thankfully! (Did I say that?) Anyway, the drum set was sold the next summer in a garage sale, and I was the happiest mom on the block. LOL I love my guitar although I wouldn't say I'm the best, but, yes, I love it especially high in the mountains...next to a crystal clear lake. Do you have a favorite spot like that?

April: I LOVE the ocean. It’s so peaceful and yet wild and untamed. You can’t stand against it, and you have to respect it. It is a place where I feel the closest to God because every aspect reminds me of Him—the expanse, power, beauty, and life.

Renee: Kind of like my mountains, huh? I love the water, too. So does my dog. In fact, he's a little obsessed about it. He went ballistic this last week when it rained. In and out, in and out of the house...all day long! The cat watched him as if he was a complete idiot. He finally collapsed on the living room floor around five o'clock and didn't move the rest of the evening. Animals. Do you have any pets?

April: Ha! After a near two-year hiatus from having cats, we were ready again (our last two passed on from illness and old age). In July, I went to a shelter to adopt two male littermates, but they were ill—and we’d had enough of that for a while. I made a cursory walk around the shelter and this little black leg with a white paw kept reaching out through the bars to me. Before I knew it, I walked out with a feisty tuxedo female, Saorise (seer-sha). Then a month later, I went to find her a friend, a younger male (so she could keep her princess standing) and found Xander, an all-black, 5-month-old kitty. But, Xander had a cage mate who he’d been with for most of his little life—Liam (4 months). So, I came home with them both (you can’t break up besties!) So, we went from no cats to three kittens in the space of three weeks!

Renee: Three cats! My husband would kill me. He only tolerates my Shasta. At least, that's what he says. But I can't say much, the man has suffered a lot due to her. I've lost count of the surgeries...April, you are a true inspiration to me. Is there a special quote or saying that comes to your mind in times of need or adversity?

April: “Count it all joy.” The phrase is taken from James 1: 2-4. I’ve learned to submit my ways to the Lord and face each challenge with Him. My suffering has absolutely produced perseverance and a joy that surpasses all understanding. Through each trial, each new diagnosis, each sickness or loss, I grow more reliant on the Lord. I get to see His power worked out in my weakness—my illness has become a blessing.

Renee: As I said, an inspiration. Thank you for that. If you could say one thing about your books, what would it be?

April: My books deal with the brokenness we all face, and point us to the Healer and holder of true Hope, Jesus.

Traveling thru Time with Danele Rotharmel (Giveaway)

Hello, everyone! I have a special guest this week…Danele Rotharmel. I know you’re going to love her as much as I do.

I remember the day I met Danele. We joked around and chatted on Facebook and before we knew it, an hour had disappeared. It was like I’d found a long lost sister. She has a contagious sense of humor. You can literally feel her love for life the second she opens her mouth! Without further ado, let me introduce you to Prism’s Danele Rotharmel.

Renee: Hi, Danele, welcome to the Diamond Mine. I’m so excited that you’re here. Time Tsunami, your debut novel, is an awesome book! Congratulations on its outstanding success. What’s so unique or special about it…from your point of view?

Danele: When I wrote Time Tsunami, I wasn’t seeking publication. I was writing to distract myself from physical pain. I was extremely ill and in the middle of a seven-year period of quarantine. I needed a way to entertain myself—so I wrote. I would laugh like crazy over my funny scenes, and shiver when I wrote my scary ones. I lived Time Tsunami with my characters, and when I was through, I’d written a book that made me proud. Time Tsunami is a “clean” book that focuses on beautiful themes like self-sacrifice, love, and friendship. It’s a story about overcoming the odds. I’d like to think that my book has something for everyone. It’s full of suspense, romance, and humor. There are plot twists to keep you guessing, action to keep you on the edge of your seat, religious discussions to make you think, and funny scenes to make you laugh. Throw in a few time travel twists, and you have a unique book that’s designed to entertain.

Renee: What about your characters? For our writers out there…how do you make them “real?”

Danele: When I was in quarantine, my characters were very important to me—in a real way, they were my friends. As the long days of my quarantine stretched, I enjoyed analyzing my characters and discovering their strengths and weaknesses. I worked hard to give them backstories to explain their quirks and behavior. I came to love my characters, and I treated them with respect. I let them evolve and grow. Just like real people, my characters have victories, but they also have failures—and it’s how they handle their failures that determines the caliber of their personalities.

Renee: Is writing easy or hard for you, Danele? What about editing?

Danele: For the most part, writing is easy. It’s like flying. I love it!!! I enjoy editing too, but I’m such a perfectionist that editing my work can take forever. Sometimes it takes me an hour to edit each page. That’s because I read each sentence hundreds of times. I analyze the language, the punctuation, and the flow. For me, five hours of excruciating work can mean five complete pages. When you read my novels, you’re looking at literally hundreds of hours of work. I want to be proud of each and every sentence. I want to do a good job.

Renee: What’s your biggest challenge as an author?

Danele: Time. When I was in quarantine, the pace of my life was extremely slow. The days stretched on forever. There was all the time in the world for writing. But now that I’m starting to reclaim my life, I find that days are zipping by so quickly that I don’t know where the hours have gone. Sometimes I find it hard to squeeze all of my tasks into a single day—but I suppose that’s true for everyone. There’s a talent to managing time—I’m just a bit rusty.

Renee: I can relate to that one! I don’t know if I can help you or not, Danele. All I can say is…get a planner, but don’t forget to make time for God, you, your family, and rest. LOL Oh, and practice how to say the word “no.” That’s my advice on “time.” So…now that you’re a published author, do you have any advice for the new writer?

Danele: Pray about everything. Dedicate your work to the Lord from the very beginning. God gave you your talent—use it to glorify Him. Never compromise. Never write a single sentence that you would be ashamed to read directly to Jesus.

Renee: Very good advice…even for the best-selling author. Thank you, Danele. Let’s switch topics from writing now to something a bit more personal. I know you’ve experienced a great deal of trial and pain in your life. Is there a special quote or verse which comes to mind in times of need or adversity?

Danele: I love Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” When I was in quarantine, I would quote Philippians 4:13 as I went through each day. When I was in pain, knowing that I could do ALL things—even survive—was important to me. A special comfort comes when you know that Christ’s help makes everything attainable, doable, survivable, and reachable.

Renee: Our God is an awesome God, isn’t He? I have one last question for you. As most people know, I’m from Wyoming. I love to spend time in this rugged but beautiful land. I call it God’s country for I experience the glory and peace of God here in many ways. Do you have a cherished “spot?” If so, where and why.

Danele: My cherished spot is an isolated lake behind my house. I love strolling around it, basking in its beauty. When I was in quarantine, the lake was my place of escape. When my “cabin fever” would become too hard to handle, that’s where I’d go. On the shores of the lake, I’d feel peace seeping back into my soul. I loved watching the dragonflies, and the frogs, and the hawks. I loved hearing the wind whispering in the leaves. I loved seeing the waves lapping against the bank. That little lake is beautiful to me—it’s the place that epitomizes peace.

Renee: I would love to see your lake. I bet it’s absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing your writing, your story, and your heart with us. You are one amazing lady, and author!

About the Author, Danele Rotharmel:

Danele Rotharmel grew up with a love of the literary word, and by age five, she knew she wanted to be a writer. However, her life took an unexpected turn when a mysterious illness brought her close to death. Eventually, she learned that a low-level carbon monoxide leak from a faulty furnace in her home was slowly poisoning her. This poisoning triggered severe Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and partial amnesia.

During this time, the hardest thing she faced was a crisis of faith. She had to quit her job and stop going to church. She couldn’t write, couldn’t drive, and could barely remember who she was. To say she was upset with the Lord was an understatement. She began reexamining her faith in light of her illness, and eventually, she came to the firm conclusion that God is real, God is good, God is interested and involved, and God is trustworthy regardless of tragedy.

When her illness became even more severe, she was put into quarantine and could only talk to friends and extended family through the glass of a window. This quarantine lasted for seven years. During this time, she wrote the first six books in The Time Counselor Chronicles.

Danele currently lives in Colorado where she continues to write. Although her journey back to health was long and difficult, it provided her with the opportunity to grow closer to God and to write her books. For that, she is forever thankful.
