GIVEAWAY and Interview with Jenelle Hovde

I am thrilled to introduce The Diamond Mine of Christian Fiction community to author Jenelle Hovde! Jenelle sat down with me and took the time to answer some of my questions on her author journey AND WE'RE DOING A GIVEAWAY. Comment on this post to be entered for a chance to win either a hard cover copy of Jenelle's novel Eve's Story: The First Daughter or A String of Pearls! I am excited to share with you my interview with Jenelle.

Here is a little bit about Jenelle:

Jenelle writes Biblical historical fiction and historical romance. After years spent in South Dakota, Jenelle and her family moved to the Florida coast. When she isn't scribbling on scraps of paper, you can find her within used bookstores perusing antique romance novels and historical journals. You also might find her at the beach with a favorite read.

Comment on this post for a chance to win The First Daughter or A String of Pearls!

Thank you for spending the time to chat with me Jenelle! Do you have a favorite author or book that has influenced or inspired you?

Jenelle: I especially love Laura Frantz’s poetic writing. I remember reading her first novel when I was on bedrest with my first child. I thought, “Wow. Christian fiction reads as beautifully as any secular award-winning historical fiction.” I think Christian fiction often hits the high notes of artistry and depth. It just keeps getting better and better.

I absolutely agree! I can get so lost in a Christian fiction story sometimes I forget it's not "mainstream!" What were the highlights or key challenges you faced when writing your last book?

Jenelle: I had three novels all at once, including edits. The novels were set in ancient Canaan with giants, Mussolini and the Italian resistance, and Regency England with archeology and secretive societies! I am blessed to have a remarkably supportive family who cooked and cleaned through my deadlines. That said, my Regency novel was a bear to write. Since it’s a newer genre for my readers, I had to wrestle with all the inner angst, along with a nasty bout of flu.

Three novels at once! I can't even imagine! I struggle with just one deadline! I'm interested to know, why did you chose to write Christian Fiction?

Jenelle: I love a strong faith message in my fiction. I’ve been so encouraged by the characters I read about, especially when I encounter similar situations such as a death in the family or a health diagnosis. Writing really is a wonderful ministry that entertains and uplifts the reader. Great books remind me of God’s faithfulness and bring wisdom! It’s like getting a hug from an author who whispers in your ear, “I’ve been there, too.”

I love that. Writing is absolutely a ministry. What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a Christian Fiction writer?

Jenelle: Read as much as you can. Write every day, even if one page. And tell yourself, “Why not you?” What if you told yourself you couldn’t get published and then never really tried because of the odds? Writing is also a spiritual journey where we must release our results into God’s hands.

It's so difficult to put your work out there, but there is beauty in allowing yourself to be vulnerable and releasing the results into God's hands. What is your favorite Bible verse or life verse that inspires you?

Jenelle: Psalm 121:1, 2, the song of ascents. “I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” I can’t do anything without His guidance and help. Actually, I find releasing my weakness and leaning into His strength so very encouraging.

Amen! What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Jenelle: I paint every day. Currently, I’m working on several Christian historical, YA fantasy, and speculative art projects for authors! I absolutely love translating my authors’ dreams into a painting that might be a book illustration, cover, or a character print for marketing.

I have to admit this was kind of a trick question. I am an ABSOLUTE fan of your artwork and wanted the opportunity for you to share about it (and for me to promote it!!) I'm especially excited that you do YA Fantasy art projects for authors as Fantasy is the genre I like to write in! So what’s next for you? Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

Jenelle: I recently sent in my bluestocking Regency novel to Tyndale House publishers! I’m ridiculously excited to work with my dream publisher and write a romantic story full of adventure. Readers can join my newsletter for exclusive Regency art, giveaways, and lots of sneak peeks into Regency life and books! I’m currently working on book two in the series.

Jenelle!! That's HUGE NEWS!! CONGRATULATIONS! This is very exciting! One last question! What do you hope Christian Readers take away from your books?

Jenelle: As a pastor’s wife, my goal is always to entertain AND draw others closer to Christ. I hope my books touch hearts no matter the geographical distance.

Thanks for taking the time to share with our Christian readers a little about you and your work Jenelle!

Suzie Waltner, Writing Longhand, & a Giveaway

There is nothing I love more than getting to know other authors in the community, and it is my pleasure to introduce to you one of our own Diamond Mine bloggers, Susie Waltner and her newest release, Midnight Blue

Suzie Waltner is a lover of fiction and is first and foremost a reader. When she’s not at work or reading or writing, you can find her cheering on the Nashville Predators (hockey) or dancing an hour away in Zumba class. Until her second year of college, her life plan was to become a veterinarian. A fainting spell while watching a surgery performed on a sheep changed that plan. Now she works in the corporate world during the day while creating stories in her free time. Suzie resides in a suburb of Nashville, TN and is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers as well as Faith, Hope, and Love Christian Writers. She currently serves as the president of the Middle Tennessee ACFW chapter.

You can keep up with Suzie by following her:  Newsletter  |  Facebook  |  Instagram  | Twitter

Now, let's dive into my favorite Fast Five Questions:

CC: Milk or Dark Chocolate?
SW: Milk Chocolate
CC: I'll forgive you for that. ;-)

CC: Print or E-book?
SW: Either. I tend to read more e-books to keep the print copies more pristine.
CC: I can see the allure in that.

CC: Cat or Dog Person?
SW: Both. I have a cat but watch a few friends' dogs when they are out of town.
CC: That's super kind of you!

CC: Morning Person or Night Owl?
SW: A fraction more on the morning person end but not much!
CC: LOL, I understand. I'm forced to by the mere fact I have children still in school.

CC: Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter?
SW: Spring and Fall
CC: Oh, those milder weather months!

Let's dive into a few personal questions before talking about your book.

CC: What are you reading right now?
SW: I often am reading one book and listening to another. Right now I am reading The Dreaming Beauty by Anneka R. Walker and I'm about to start listening to The Last Way Home by Liz Johnson.
CC: For a while, I was doing the same thing. The different formats makes it easier to bounce between books.

CC: What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
SW: I write every first draft longhand. It's taken me a while to figure out why I can open a blank document and stare at it with nothing coming to me but the minute that pen hits the paper, the words flow. Because I work at a computer all day long, the action of writing out the scenes triggers my brain that I am switching from numbers and logic to something more creative.
CC: There is actual science behind this fact that supports why you are able to do that. It's incredibly fascinating to me, and something I need to spend more time doing.

CC: What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
SW: I do most of my writing on the weekends where I can block of large chunks of time to get in the zone. Weeknights just tend to get too busy. I do like doing sprints and I've found a couple of people on YouTube who do sprints. Even if I can't be there live, I'll pull up the videos and play them so it feels like there are others in it with me.
CC: Sprints save me SOOOO much. For those of you who don't know, sprints are when writers get together, set a timer, and then try to get as many words down in that time frames as they can. I suppose you don't HAVE to have other writers around, but it is definitely more motivating.

Where would authors be without books? Suzie's latest book, Midnight Blue, released this week.

Midnight Blue by Suzie Waltner

A series of heartbreaking setbacks behind her, Scarlett Sykes is now focused on creating the best life possible for her daughter. One where innocence and joy is not colored by rejection or loss. While finances are tight and Scarlett’s job isn’t ideal for a single mother, her child will always know she’s loved. Especially since Harmony’s father wanted nothing to do with them. As lead singer and the face of a successful country band, Jake Turnquist’s closest friends depend on him, but life in the spotlight is quickly losing its appeal. At a party celebrating another accomplishment, he’s stunned to discover Scarlett assisting the caterer. Almost ten years have passed, but he’s never forgotten his first love. In the hours after a surprise revelation, Jake scrambles to orchestrate a way to spend time with Scarlett and Harmony—the family he’s always wanted but never knew he had. He once gave her up to pursue his music. What will he have to surrender to win her back?

You can purchase your copy at Amazon

CC: Who was the most challenging character to create? What made them so difficult?
SW: Andi Buchanan. She's a secondary character in Midnight Blue and she's a tough nut to crack. The one band member who doesn't say much and keeps her emotions under wraps. I'm learning more about her as I continue to write this series, and I can't wait to really dive into her backstory.
CC: Oh, those side characters can be tricky, and I love how they end up developing into their own complicated stories.

CC: If you could be any of your characters, which one would it be? Why?
SW: Cassidy Cagle because she speaks her mind, takes no excuses, and is fiercely protective of the people she loves.
CC: She seems like a really strong, independent woman.

CC: How do you select the names of your characters?
SW: Some character names are just there when I'm writing them, but others take a little while (and usually the help of a baby name book or website).
CC: Those baby name books and websites can be a lifesaver for sure!

CC: What do you hope readers will take away from your story?
SW: That no matter how badly we mess up, God can redeem our mistakes and breathe new life into relationships we see as dead or broken.
CC: Amen, and such an important reminder to all of us.

CC: One last fun question: If you could have any superpower, which would it be?
SW: Time manipulation - I'd make my work week move faster and my writing weekends stretch longer (and also vacations and fun trips could last)
CC: Oh that is a good one that I would never have thought of, but now I want it.

Meet Jessie Mattis

Summer is here, and so is author Jessie Mattis. Her interview was filled with fun tidbits for me. Especially, her "writing shed". That had me filled with excitement. Let's find out more about her and her work. Jesse's middle grade fiction novel, Power Up, won second place the 2020 Selah Award, and also first place in the 2020 Christian Indie Awards. She's also written in other genres. Since my interest began with middle grade fiction and has moved to adult fiction, I couldn't wait to learn more in our interview. So first things first, lets get to know her by learning more about what inspires her.

Hello Jessie. Can you tell our Diamond Miners a little about yourself?

Sure. I'm married to my best friend Chip, and we have three kids ages 14, 12, and 10. We love being together and spending time with extended family too. I love black coffee in the morning, mid-morning, and afternoon. It makes life possible...with Jesus, of course.

I know a lot of coffee drinkers. They seem to be like you! Do you have any pets to round out your crew?

Yes, we have a two-year-old labradoodle (or labradoofus, as my husband affectionately calls him) named Guster. He has the curliest hair of any dog on the planet, and keeping him groomed is a nightmare, but he's loveable and my kids adore him. We also have eight chickens, but I'm not sure I would call them pets, haha.

I'd love to hear about your writing. What is your reason for writing?

I'm always inspired to write things that will draw people closer to God. My first book, a middle grade novel called Power-Up, was written because I craved good fiction that would show mychildren how to listen to and lean into the Holy Spirit's guidance, and I found little to nothing available. I wrote it to fill the gap in what my family needed, and pary it meets that need for someone else too.

I've always heard if you're looking for a certain kind of story, and don't find it, you should write it. You did it! That's really amazing. It won the Selah Award also. What a great encouragement. What are some other things you've worked on?

Last year I contributed a short story in a book called Christmas from the Heart: A collection of Christmas Romances. My story, titled Almost Christmas Again, was inspired by a mash-up of friends and family's experiences, imagination, and a delightful vacation we once took to Colorado.

What is your current WIP, Work in Progress? Is it another middle-grade novel?

No, these days I'm working on historical fiction, and my writing is very much inspired by my own family history. For example, I'll think of a situation my grandmother faced and think, "What if...?" The story takes off from there. Always, the ultimate goal is to inspire others in their walk with God.

Have you considered writing in any other genres? You've covered a few so far!

Yes I have. Christian fiction is my broad genre, including middle grade, contemporary, and historical. I have considered non-fiction, but will probably only jump into that if I feel strongly called.

Who would you say has been the biggest influence in your writing?

Francine Rivers is the author who first made me truly love Christian fiction. Her books are truly works of art, and as a writer, it's fun to read them and study her technique.

What is the hardest part of writing a book for you?

The hardest part of writing is finding the time! :) As a homeschooling mom of three, my days are full, so I have to get creative to make space for writing. It is also difficult to make sure I'm somewhat following the writing "formula" for successful fiction. I see why it's important to do so, but I don't always like it.

As a former homeschool mom, I can relate to how hard it would be to find time to write. I didn't begin writing fiction until many years after my girls left home. Do you have a favorite spot to write?

Two years ago, my sweet husband, dad, brother-in-law, and friend transformed our run-down garden shed into a writing shed, complete with mini fridge and coffee bar. It's one of my favorite places in the world, and it's the easiest place for me to focus and get my work done.

A writing shed?! I'm so jealous. Well, I guess I shouldn't say jealous but how exciting for you to have such a great spot! So, are you a night owl or an early bird out in your writing shed?

Night owl! My head is clearest when the entire family is in bed and I only have one thing to focus on.

Tell us about your all time favorite book.

Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry by Mildred D. Taylor is one of those childhood books that really stuck with me, so I'll always call that one a favorite. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin is probably my all-time favorite, which is funny because I generally have a hard time getting into books from that period.

Let's change direction for a minute and talk turkey, or whatever else you like to cook. Do you like to cook? Tell us some of your favorites.

I don't love to cook, but I do it! I'd rather be doing something else. I prefer simple, tasty things, like throwing a roast in the crock-pot with carrots and potatoes. Baking is a different story; I much prefer baking to cooking. It can be difficult because I try to limit sweets so I'm constantly making substitutions...but all bets are off in December. :) I have also developed my cake-decorating skills over the years, and that's a lot of fun for me.

Thanks Jessie for a wonderful chat. I look forward to reading your next novel, whatever the genre might be.

Anne, thanks for joining us. Tell us some interesting facts about your work as an author.

1.     As Christian writers, we long to share God’s love, goodness, and grace with others through our writing. But quite often our stories speak to us as much as our readers. How did God use this story to help you stretch and grow as a person?

It took me over two years to write Never Give Up, and I actually came close to giving up several times! I struggled a lot, spiritually and emotionally, while writing this book and marketing my three previous books. So many times, I felt forgotten by the writing community – and God. It’s very hard to write when the enemy is feeding you lies – that nobody cares, you’re a joke, you aren’t good enough, etc. Last year, I lamented to a few writing friends, and I cringe when I think about the pity parties I had. Finally, a couple of friends gave it to me straight about how I need to get past these negative emotions and trust God. So, over the past year, I’ve buried myself in the Word and have had a daily dialogue with God. I poured all my emotions into my characters and worked out issues through them. As they’ve learned truths, so have I. Now I can’t wait to write more books so I can continue this spiritually therapeutic process! I honestly feel like my relationship with God has grown deeper. I hope my readers are inspired by the transformations of my characters over the entire four-book series.

2.     What is the quality you like the most about your heroine?

I admire Beth’s patience with David, that she supported him and put off her dreams for years to allow his dreams to be fulfilled. In Never Give Up, she finally has a chance to work on her own career goals, and she juggles college and motherhood to make that happen. So, I also love her tenacity in finishing her degree.

3.     Being a writer is a busy life, isn’t it? I’m sure you’re working on something new to intrigue your readers. What’s in the works for you right now?

While I was waiting in between edits for Never Give Up, I began planning a new short story to use as a newsletter freebie after the holidays. My current freebie is a Christmas story set at a California winery. The new story, titled “Forever Young”, will be a romance set in current day and in 1987 (Daughter needs relationship advice and mother flashes back to her similar relationship issues). It’s been fun planning out the playlist, since I love 80s music!

Beyond that, I have a new novel I’d like to write for a proposal, to try for traditional publishing. The working title is “Not of This World”, and it’s based (loosely) on my own testimony. This is a standalone novel, with a potential to be part of a three-book series.

I also plan to write another self-published novel, titled “Backstage Baby” about a girl who runs away from home and gets caught up in the groupie lifestyle, and how God pursues her through an old childhood friend. This story is set in the 1980’s, and the heroine, Chelsea, has a cameo in my third novel, Never Change. This novel is planned for a Spring 2022 release.

4.     Do you have a set writing time every day or do you write in a more organic way?

My ideal writing time is 9-4 (ish) on the days I don’t work at my accounting job. I’m an “almost” empty-nester, and I have taken over my younger son’s bedroom while he’s away at college! My older son is a sophomore at junior college, and he uses our home office, while my husband camps out in our family room for his workday. Having a quiet room to myself has really helped me maintain this writing schedule. My son will be home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, so I’ll have to adjust while he’s home!

5.     What characteristics do you value most in your heroes?

My current hero and the ones I plan to write about are all musicians. Music and musicians will almost always be an integral part of my stories. My heroes are also loyal, caring, protective, vulnerable in some way, and kind-hearted.

Giveaway!

Since my current release is the fourth and final book of my romance/women’s fiction series, I will gift one commenter a set of all four eBooks. To enter your name, tell me your favorite Christmas tradition. Extra entries if you follow me on any of my social media sites! (Make sure to comment where you’re following). Please include your email if you’d like to enter the giveaway.

Big O’l Barn Sparks Story

Interview with LoRee Peery Plus a Giveaway.
I am so blessed and excited to introduce you to LoRee Peery. I love her books. Her stories feel personal and real to me.  I have had the pleasure of meeting this beautiful lady face to face, and she is a real gem.

Nebraska country girl LoRee Peery writes fiction that hopefully appeals to adult readers who enjoy stories written from a Christian perspective, focusing on the romance. These include novels and novellas for women and men in the Contemporary, Romance, Historical, Time Travel, and Mystery/Suspense categories. She writes of redeeming grace with a sense of place. Her Frivolities Series and the book based on her father's unsolved homicide, Touches of Time, are available on Amazon. She is who she is by the grace of God: Christian, country girl, wife, mother, grandmother and great-, sister, friend, and author.
Connect with LoRee through these links: www.loreepeery.com

LoRee: I'm excited to be here and talk about the first of my two time travels. Cowboy Just in Time released the end of July. It is the Hearts Across Time book #1. Future of My Heart is book #2 and released the end of August.

Renette: Thank you for being here with me. These stories sound amazing. Let's talk about Cowboy Just in Time. What was your inspiration for this story?

LoReeI was captivated by a big old barn on an acreage where my brother once lived. It was down the hill from the house, and the door opened right into the loft. I was amazed that the contour of the land had stayed the same from when it was built. The lower level, or where the animals were contained, opened onto the corral. It's constructed in a way cool manner.

Renette: I love taking pictures of old barns. They do get the imagination working, don't they? What personal journey did you take while writing this book?

LoRee: I had never attempted writing in a historical setting, though I was familiar with a rather rugged farm life of the 1950s (no indoor bathroom until I was ten), I had to look up quite a bit for the sake of accuracy. I may have gone overboard on cowboy lingo.

Renette: You have a beautiful personal story. I bet your growing up years helped uniquely tell the story. Speaking of your own story, do you have a life verse? What is it? And Why?

LoRee: Yes. Isaiah 12:2, "Behold God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; For the Lord God is my strength and song. And He has become my salvation." I see myself as a victorious overcomer. Victorious spirit relates to the root of my name, which literally means laurel leaves. They were used in the winner's crown of ancient Roman games.

Renette: Names fascinate me. My family is known for unusual names. I'm curious what is or was your occupation before writing?

LoRee: I was an editorial assistant for twenty years, as well as a secretary.

Renette: Does it influence your writing?

LoRee: Definitely. I learned a lot about sentence structure, how not to write (insert smiley face), and to edit. It's so much easier to have things jump out in the writing of others. That means we can all benefit by other eyes on our work.

Renette: So true. No matter how many times we look at our work, we will miss something. I appreciate extra eyes on my work. It is a real talent to have things jump out at you. Do you have any other hidden skills?

LoRee: Two things come to mind. I have a knack for putting colors together. That shows up in the piecework quilting I've done and the way I decorate and dress. The other is snapping pictures. Odd objects, particularly in nature, catch my eye. I don't have a fancy camera to do delayed time shots or that messes with numbered settings, I just have a curious artsy eye.

Renette: I taught photography to high schoolers. One thing I encouraged them to do, think outside the box. Naturel angles and light can make a big difference. I bet your pictures are every bit as fun as your stories. What do you hope your writing leaves the reader with?

LoRee: Hope, and a glimpse as to how God works in our lives. My characters either aren't in a relationship with Christ at the beginning of my stories, or they have a lot of growing to do. Naturally, since I write romance, the happily-ever-after should be satisfying.

Renette: I see those things in your writing. Thanks again for being here with me today on the Diamond Mine. You have been a blessing.

LoRee: On a final note, I'm curious as to how others feel about time travel. If you could travel back or forward, where would you go? Do you think you'd stay for love?
Please answer, and I'll give a commenter the choice between a print copy of Repurposed, or a PDF of Cowboy Just in Time, Hearts Across Time #1.
It's been my privilege to appear on the Diamond Mine.

 Cowboy Just in Time blurb:
When event planner Amanda Totten falls through a barn trapdoor and finds herself in the arms of an 1890's Cowboy, she scrambles to find a way back to the future. She has a life and obligations—her fledgling business and her mother's financial needs. But the less stressful lifestyle, and her deepening love for Gavin Medley, is calling to her heart and she is torn between past and future.
Has God given her a chance at love?
Gavin Medley has been working for years to regain his family homestead. As ranch foreman, he has nothing but a dream of a place and family of his own. But his love for Amanda is making him think that having his own ranch isn't as important as having someone to love for the rest of his life.
Amanda returns to the future, and Gavin is shattered. He tries to go forward in time but fails. Believing it's God's will, Gavin resigns himself to living without the love of his life. But love transcends time, and Amanda and Gavin need each other. Can Amanda return to her Cowboy?
