Gail Pallotta and Treading Water: Barely above Water, Revised Edition

Dear Readers,

Thank you for being a part of this blog community! I hope you enjoy getting to meet the authors-- and I hope you're having a great summer!

~Blessings, Christina

Please introduce yourself—name, where you’re from, and something people notice when they meet you?

Hi, I’m Gail Pallotta. A current resident of Georgia, I grew up at the foothills of the North Carolina Mountains. I love meeting and talking with people, and I think they sense that about me, because my husband says I’m the only person he knows who can go in the grocery for a loaf of bread and come out with someone’s life story.

Tell us about your book—title and back cover blurb?

In Treading Water: Barely above Water, revised edition, Suzie Morris suffers a sense of isolation and loneliness when she’s struck with an illness her physician can’t diagnose. Without family, she’s on her own. To make matters worse, her boyfriend dumps her. Relying on her Christian faith, she moves to Destin, Florida, to get treatment from an alternative doctor. After she lands a temporary job coaching a fun, county-sponsored rag-tag swim team, her handsome boss, Matt Combs, renews her belief in love. However, when Matt learns of Suzie’s medical problem, he cuts romantic ties. Recently saddened by the illness and death of his mother, he fears he couldn’t face another loss. Later he regrets his decision and tries to make amends. Hope for healing flickers inside Suzie when she hears of new remedies, but will the latest discoveries work for her? If she recovers, can Matt regain her trust?
Excerpt:

Suzie fidgeted in her chair three months later as she sat in an office in Destin, Florida. A door shut, and she jumped. She took a deep breath and pulled back her shoulders. She would appear confident and calm, God willing. She had to steady her right hand. The interviewer would probably offer to shake it. A man entered and walked to her, his broad shoulders taking over the room.
“Matt Combs. Sorry I’m late. I hope you weren’t too bored sitting here.”
He offered a handshake. She peered at his squared, strong-looking extremity as she extended her hand as fast as she could. “I’m fine, thank you. It’s nice to meet you.”
Had he detected the trembling? He didn’t stare at her hand. Guess not. As Mr. Combs situated himself, Suzie surveyed his office, getting a glimpse of who he was.
A plaque for Outstanding Manager as head of the Okaloosa County Parks and Recreation Department hung on the wall alongside pictures of kids in bathing suits and soccer players in blue uniforms. A full trophy case sat next to his bookcase. She could get him another victory in spite of the sickness, if he’d give her a chance.
The rollers on his black chair clicked as he pulled it to his metal desk. He pushed a pile of folders to one side then looked up with a sheepish grin.
“I haven’t had a chance to clean. Harold Gubb, my assistant and the county bookkeeper, was out sick last week. I’m a little backed up.”
Suzie clenched a pencil in three fingers and released it, then repeated the action in her lap. She started the habit to check her strength after she’d lost twenty-five pounds. Now she did it when she was nervous. “You have a nice office.”
Matt’s shoulders relaxed. “I suppose, as county cubicles at community centers go, it’s okay.” He waved his hand toward a desk in front of his. “Barely room for Harold when we’re both here, but I’m in the field quite a bit. We manage.”
He retrieved a folder from the pile he’d just moved and studied it. “Ahh, I see you coached a swim team and won your division every year except your first. That’s quite an accomplishment.”
He gazed at her with admiration in his eyes. Suzie scooted up as hope Matt Combs might hire her flickered in the back of her mind. “You were in high school and college then. Now, you’re...” He glanced at her application, then sat back in his seat. “Twenty-five?” He arched an eyebrow. “Uh, most recently, you’ve worked as an editor of a community magazine in Blue Mountain, North Carolina. It says here you quit your job to move? Could I ask why?”
Suzie recoiled at the suspicion in his voice. Carson would say she had to move because she was a druggie. Sad that his ridiculous opinion still upset her. She glanced at the three-quarter-length sleeve of her blouse. Before Carson broke up with her, he’d suggested she wear sufficient clothing to cover her skinny body. Dwelling on him wasn’t worth the hurt and ire that rose from recalling his degrading remark, but more importantly she couldn’t let anything distract her. She had to have this job. She swallowed hard.
  Play the game.

Let's get to know the blog readers a bit--Ask the blog reader a quirky question or two?

Suzie grows to love her job coaching a rag-tag swim team. Have you ever taken a job or volunteered for an activity more because you needed to than wanted to, then ended up enjoying it? These days, we all need our faith to get through life. Can you tell us about a time when you relied on your faith.

Welcoming Jane Vaughan and A Story of Grace

Thank you, again, to Diamonds in Christian Fiction for allowing me to share my friends' work. I am grateful to be able to support fellow authors this way. Please join me in welcoming Jane and her first published book!

Introduce yourself—name, where you’re from, and something people notice when they meet you. Hi there! My name is Jane Bayly Vaughan. I’m from the lowcountry of South Carolina. When people meet me, they tend to notice my first name. There doesn’t seem to be many Janes around. I love it because often people ask if it is a family name and I get to talk about genealogy!

Tell us about your book—title and back cover blurb. The Ties That Bind is my debut novel and first in the series: A Story of Grace.

In 1830s Cornwall, Grace Bayly faces
   unimaginable events that threaten the
survival of her family. Her father and half
of her large family are an ocean away
and her mother and remaining siblings are
poised to follow. As hardships close
in, hopes of a new beginning grow distant.
She must summon fortitude borne of love
and sacrifice to hold her family together.
Amid the unyielding grip of loss and grief,
Grace steels herself to persist as she
faces the ultimate challenge that threatens
to break her. Will Grace find the
strength she needs to ensure her family
survives? A poignant tale of loyalty,
resilience, and the enduring bonds that
shape a woman’s courage when everything she cherishes is at stake. Inspired by real people and events.

Share one thing that you found difficult or challenging
about writing this book? My biggest challenge was using
the genealogy information to find the story behind all those
dates and dusty records. I wanted to write a historical fiction
as close to the truth as possible to honor my ancestors and
tell a compelling story. It was interesting getting “into their
skins” to imagine what their lives were really like.

Do you enjoy family history? Share an interesting ancestor. I have several. One of my great grandmothers was the daughter of a captain of a British warship stationed in Charleston, SC a few years prior to the Revolution. She was born in England and was orphaned at the age of 3. She arrived in Charleston, SC at some point, married, and had many children. Then there was a great grandfather who had a silver mine in New Mexico. I could go on!

Dear Readers,

Welcome to 2026 (this is my first post of the year)! My first guest of the year is an author friend I made through my previous publisher (now out of business). We messaged and then met Carolina Christian Conference in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It's been several years and supporting one another is lovely! So, please join me in welcoming, Colleen Hall.

Introduce yourself—name, where you’re from, and something people notice when they meet you.
Hi! I’m Colleen Hall, and I grew up in New England. In college, I met and married a South Carolina guy, so now I live in the South. I think one of the first things people notice about me is my red hair. I’ve been referred to as “that redhead.” I’ve also been called just “Red.”

Tell us about your book—title and back cover blurb? The title of my latest book is Beloved Enemy. The idea for this book came from some family history. One of my Maine ancestors fought in the Civil War. While he was in the South, he struck up a friendship with a Southern lady. After the war, they maintained a correspondence. My creative brain took that germ of an idea and turned it into a full-fledged romance. A story centered around the forbidden love of two people on different sides of a war has so much possibility for conflict and heartbreak. I just had to write this story!

Back-Cover Blurb: “What happens when love and duty collide? When two people in love are on different sides of a war? In an era when honor matters more than life, and duty counts more than love, Booth Slade and Serena Boyd meet and fall in love. He’s a wealthy New England industrialist. She’s a genteel daughter of the South, the young widow of an autocratic banker. When Serena’s reputation is accidentally compromised, Booth proposes a plan to restore her respectability. They embark on a sham engagement, and what begins as feigned affection develops into genuine love. Yet Serena’s deceased husband’s last will and testament casts a dark cloud over their future. When the Civil War declares them to be enemies, the politics, danger, and hardship of the times engulf them. Tangled loyalties test their love. Subterfuge draws them into the secret service’s web. Will Serena make the difficult choice that will betray her beloved homeland to save the man she loves? Beloved Enemy is a standalone Civil War romance. If you love fake relationships, second chances, feisty heroines, and wartime romance, you’ll enjoy this historical love story with a dash of intrigue thrown in.”

Share an excerpt? March, 1865 Richmond, VA Cory laid the hairbrush on the marble-topped vanity after she’d arranged Serena’s hair into its daytime chignon. When someone pounded on the apartment door, their gazes met in the mirror. A visitor at this early hour could only mean trouble. Serena surged from the vanity bench and wheeled toward the chamber door, her pulse jagged. Cory thrust out a hand. “I’ll see who’s callin’.” She shuffled toward the hallway. With her hands fisted against her chin, Serena waited in the center of the room. Something had to be amiss. When Cory returned clutching a folded scrap of paper, a frown pulled her brows together. “Miz Van Lew’s servant brung this note.” Serena snatched the missive and fumbled open the paper. The words scrawled across the page in a feminine hand leaped at her. Your husband entered Richmond two days ago. I regret to inform you that last night as he attempted to leave, he was arrested by General Winder’s police and incarcerated at Libby Prison. His trial has been set for this afternoon, but rumor says he’s to hang at dawn. EVL. Booth? In Richmond? The words on the page blurred, and the room swam in a dizzied fog. A buzzing like a swarm of bees filled her ears. Her vision darkened. Her legs wobbled. Cory wrapped an arm around her and supported her to the chaise lounge. “Put your head betwixt your knees, Miz Serena.” She pushed Serena’s head down. With her head on her knees, Serena closed her eyes and took deep breaths. When the world steadied, she sat up and peered at her maid. “Miss Van Lew says Booth has been captured and jailed in Libby Prison.” She gulped before she could continue. “He’s to hang at dawn.” Her husband had been sentenced to a felon’s death by hanging and not given the dignity of execution by firing squad as befitted an officer. She clamped her lips against the scream that threatened to erupt. A single tear trembled on her lashes and slid down her cheek. Serena swiped away the moisture and straightened her spine. She refused to weep. “I’ve got to do something. I can’t sit here and let Booth die.”

Ask a quirky question or two? I always like to engage the readers. :) Have you had an unusual pet or animal? Please let me know! (My most unusual pet was a ferret named Teaspoon.)

Covers that Captivate

Covers that Captivate

Welcome friends! This week I am highlighting the authors here on the Diamond Mine. This group has some great fiction. I especially wanted to highlight a few of their great covers! There is a giveaway, my newest eBook, Spun is the item up for bid for one lucky reader! Please leave a comment or fill out our contact form to enter.

Also, please read to the end. We are saying goodbye to a couple of dear authors for 2025, one of which, sadly enough, we are saying our final goodbye.

**********

The first cover I want to highlight is Yellow Roses by Suzie Waltner. I simply love all the Love in Color covers. Take a look:

Yellow Roses (Love in Color)

Mia Mason has always strived to meet others’ expectations. Her adoptive family, her fans, even her friends in the band. She works hard at pleasing everyone because she’s never felt like she truly belongs. After connecting with a cousin through a DNA website, she plans a covert road trip, hoping to find her biological mother and the answers she desires.

During a music awards ceremony, Levi Sinclair receives two messages that ruin his night. One is a breakup text from his girlfriend of six weeks. The other is from the father who abandoned his family seventeen years ago and wants to reconnect. Then Levi discovers Mia’s secret mission and insists on going along to keep her safe.

As the two friends pass the miles and see the sights, Levi’s true feelings for Mia rise to the surface. And her journey to the past might open the door to their future. Family issues and a shared career are just two of the hurdles they’ll have to jump if they want a shot at love. Could the end of the road lead these friends to a new beginning?

 Bio:

Suzie Waltner is a lover of fiction and is, first and foremost, a reader. When she’s not at work, reading or writing, you can find her cheering on her hockey team or dancing an hour away in Zumba class. Until her second year of college, her life plan was to become a veterinarian. A fainting spell while watching a surgery performed on a sheep changed that plan. Now she works in the corporate world during the day while creating stories in her free time. Suzie resides in a suburb of Nashville, TN and is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers as well as Faith, Hope, and Love Christian Writers.

Next up is Carrie Walker's book Right Before Their Eyes. Such a gorgeous cover and part of a series!

Right Before Their Eyes

Clare Martin thought nothing of agreeing to live with her dementia-ridden grandmother when her parents left on mission. Balancing that with her job as a social worker and the expectations of her career-driven boyfriend proved doable—until Grandma started a house fire.

Mason Hughes has loved Clare for years, but the time was never right to tell her and now she’s dating someone else, fixing Mason firmly in the friend zone. He’s working to be a pediatric neurologist, a dream inspired by a special boy with a terminal brain condition, and must choose a medical school. Finances are so tight he’s forced to consider a program across the country, a troubling fact he’s kept secret.

Lucia Roberts, a seventeen-year-old on Clare’s caseload, loses her foster home and is placed in an unwelcoming group home. At every turn she’s met with rejection and becomes desperate for any proof she has value—enough to make choices that could affect the rest of her life.

When Grandma Dottie and Lucia's paths take a dangerous turn, Clare frantically tries to save them. As their lives knit together, will they find the love that’s right before their eyes?

Bio:

Carrie Walker lives in Michigan with her husband and seven children. From her ten years serving as a high school youth minister, adventures around the globe, and raising a family, many stories have been knit within her heart.

As an avid reader she pens what she loves to read, contemporary stories that bring hope to a hurting world. Weaving romance among story lines of characters in struggle, she aims to show God working in all situations. When she’s not playing board games with her husband, shuttling kids in the Walker bus or wishing for snow, Carrie can be found at the keyboard bringing those stories to life.

Carrie’s writing has been recognized in many contests. Her debut novel, Emma’s Hero, placed in the ACFW Crown Award, Monroe Walton Center for the Arts Award, and won the 2020 ACFW First Impressions Contest.

Then Regina Rudd Merrick has the next captivating cover of Carolina Dream. Good golly, Miss Molly there is very little I don't like about this cover. Victorian southern mansion, check, beachline, double check.

Carolina Dream

A Southern Breeze Series – Book One

Sarah Crawford wants more from life than to attend the wedding of her ex-fiancée. An unexpected inheritance in South Carolina comes at the perfect time, just as Sarah is willing to use any excuse to get out of town. When she meets potential business partner Jared Benton and discovers that a house is part of the inheritance, she is sure that God has been preparing her for this time through a recurring dream.

But will a dream about an antebellum mansion, many rooms to be explored, and a man with dark brown eyes give her the confidence to take a leap of faith, leaving friends, family, and her job behind?

Bio:

Regina Rudd Merrick has written all her life. From the scribbling of a young child writing "I love you" notes to her mother, to the teenager who tried to write a more satisfying sequel to Gone with the Wind, she developed a distinct love of "happily ever after." That love of fiction parlayed into a career as a librarian, and she is the former director of a small public library in Marion, KY. She began attending local writing workshops and continued to hone her craft by writing several short and novel-length fan-fiction pieces published online. In fact, it was after writing Christian-themed stories based on a television show that ended too soon that she decided to pursue original fiction. With encouragement from some writing friends, she attended her first ACFW conference and met like-minded writers that were as concerned with building others up as with their own careers. Regina is now an active member of the Ken-Ten Writing Group, which has participants from Western Kentucky and Western Tennessee, and helps plan the group's yearly conference. She is an instrumentalist and vocalist in the music program of her church and has participated in many areas of ministry over the years. Married for 30+ years, Regina and her husband, Todd, have two grown daughters who share her love of music, writing, and the arts. They live in Marion, in Western Kentucky, in a county where there are, literally, more deer than people. Her hobbies include watching other people work on houses on HGTV, decorating, antiquing (otherwise known as "picking"), cooking, reading, playing music, and dreaming of the beaches of South Carolina.

Here's Gay N. Lewis's (also G.N. Lewis) charming cover for Sarah and the Angelic Magical Makeover. Who doesn't love the aqua-marine (teal, turquoise~you pick your color label, LOL) cast?

Sarah and the Angelic Magical Makeover

How can a dyslexic, low-esteemed, inexperienced angel help Valerie, an insecure, overweight woman with a poor image of herself? To complicate matters, two men present themselves as possible mates for Valerie, but only one is the real deal. Can Sarah achieve a makeover while discovering the true love for Valerie?

Bio:

Gay N. Lewis, a Texas minister's wife writes about angels and romance. She has two women's fiction books. Clue into Kindness and Mattie's Choice. Mattie's Choice is historical. Often called upon as an inspirational speaker, she uses humor with Biblical teaching.

With the exception of one year in Oklahoma, Gay N. Lewis and her pastor husband served churches in Texas. Before becoming a full time author, her livelihood embraced interior design, photography, and communication. She's written and produced videos for the retail market and for local churches. These videos include Psalms from the Mountains and The Canadian Rockies.

Prism Book Group signed her in 2012 to a three book contract for the Sarah Series. Sarah is a dyslexic angel who romantically links couples together, but she does it with a lot of whacky goof ups along the way. The Sarah Series is a bit of I Love Lucy, I Dream of Jeanie, and Touched by an Angel rolled into one. Sarah provides chuckles and a bit of inspiration on her missions. The Sarah Series provides uplifting and feel good moments.

To date, Pelican Book Group, the Prism Imprint continues to sign Gay Lewis to book contracts. Books are available in eBook, print, and audio.

Gay Lewis says, "Parsonage life requires angels, and I've seen one or two. Without a sense of comedy, life is too dull."

 **********

My friend, Nancy Shew Bolton is up next to show you her hippy-flippy cover of her book entitled The Flip Side of Love. I'm a sucker for the 70s vintage look!

The Flip Side of Love

In the unsettled days of 1972, music is the steady focus of Ruth's life and the high point of each college day. But when her happiness derails in the span of a few seconds time, Ruth is left to piece together a life that becomes fraught with confusion and emotional turmoil.

Paul has worked hard to school his stormy personality into a career that satisfies his love of music and a desire to teach. Yet his own actions threaten to rob him of his vocation, his reputation, and his view of himself. Confronting his own shortcomings was not part of his plans. But when he meets Ruth, everything changes.

Amid the challenges of life in the politically and socially turbulent 1970s, both must find comfort and support through the music they love and each other.

Bio:

Nancy Shew Bolton is a widow after 44 years of marriage, a mother of five grown sons, and grandmother to a boy and girl. Ever since she learned to write, she would jot down her thoughts and impressions in little snippets of inspiration in the form of poetry, song lyrics, or short essays. About 10 years ago, she decided to try her hand at writing a full length book. She's since written 8 more works of fiction, one non-fiction, and is working on an idea for a children's book, as well as more fiction manuscripts.

Writing a full-length work is much more challenging than she thought, and she has received so much valuable assistance from other writers, especially from the ACFW critique groups. Her husband had been supportive of her long hours spent at the keyboard. Many thanks to her beloved Johnny! And now she's under contract with Pelican Book Group's Prism Imprint. What a journey!

Nancy loves to write character-driven stories about relationships of love and faith, since she is fascinated by the complexities within this emotional terrain. She thanks God and His Son for her life, her loved ones and the spark of creativity inside every person. She believes each person is a unique creation, with their own special voice and place in this amazing universe. God's handiwork amazes her every day!

**********

Lastly, let me toot my own horn, thank you for your patient indulgence. From the moment I saw this cover, I knew, KNEW it was Maggie, my main squeeze in Spun. Little side note, this story is a spin off of Rumpelstiltskin. The more you know....

No. No more fairy tales. Widow Maggie Robbins would be a fool no more. She’d married a thief believing him to be her gilded deliverer during her mother’s unexpected illness and death. Now, tucked in her cabin, Maggie and her eight-year-old son, are surrounded by the gang who killed her thieving husband. They demand her dead husband’s last heist—gold—and lots of it.  Among the evil men is Maggie’s childhood love, Hank Sutter, who’d abandoned her years ago. Time and circumstance has curdled the love she once held for him and she dare not trust him.

Hank’s only thought is of Maggie who he never stopped loving. On a mission to become a Ranger to be worthy of her, he’s infiltrated a gang of bank robbers. He’s torn between extracting information from Maggie and his desire to keep her safe. But when he discovers his bogus contact is merely measuring out revenge on Maggie and her son, Hank must recover the boy and protect Maggie at all costs. Can he and Maggie find the child before he’s gone for good? Or will Maggie forever blame him for abandoning her again when she needs him most?

 Hi Christina,

Welcome to the Diamond Mine. We're about to begin a new year, and I always enjoy to opportunity to reflect on the year and make goals for the new year. What about you?

Thank you so much for having me! I needed a nudge to get me thinking ahead! I do always create goals for each new year in different categories—writing, spiritual, physical, and social. I may not meet everyone, but they’re a great place to start.

Christina Sinis’si Goals for Writing:  Next year, for my writing goals: 1) Write two new novels (I take about six months per book these last few years), 2) Submit to an agent, 3) Do a GoodReads Giveaway (the only form of promotion I haven’t done yet), 4) Do a book signing, and 5) Do a talk somewhere new.

Among my spiritual goals is to read and complete a new devotional so I’m not one to focus on just one Bible verse, but I do love digging into God’s word.

By the way, I’m a psychologist by day, and actually teach about creating better goals. Here are some guidelines: 1) Keep them to a few so as not to be overwhelming, 2) Keep them under your control—it’s up to me to submit to an agent, for example, but I can’t control whether I sign with an agent, and 3) Tie them to a time frame.

My latest book is titled, Sweet Summer.

In Sweet Summer, Shelby Marano is the youngest of three sisters and was always Daddy’s baby girl—until her father was murdered. Ever since, she’s been running from anyone or anything that could truly hurt her. Instead, she seeks calculated thrills that leave her exhilarated, but when she’s caught outside during a summer storm, she quickly realizes not all adventures are within her control.

Tyler Burgess offers her both refuge from the rain and a safe place to land. Time spent with Tyler proves him to be much more than just a nerd in a history museum, but what she finds out about him is a dealbreaker for her. As Shelby’s perfect little world is threatened by family health issues and an unknown stalker, she learns the hard lesson that no one can hide from the dangers of life. Can Shelby let her sisters, Tyler, and even more importantly, God, show her in one Sweet Summer, that love is worth taking the risk?

Is this book part of a series, or a stand-alone? This book is the sequel to Christmas Confusion, but can also be read alone. The third book in the series, Why They Call It Falling, is set to be released in May 2022.

I can’t wait for everyone to read the whole story!

Christina, how can readers can connect with you?
